I'm chinese but have lived in Australia since '74. So I've probably been in Oz longer than some posters here.
I suffered some racism throughout my time here but mainly from uneducated people. Workmates, university people were all great and I never felt out of place. Funny thing was that Aussie kids treated me as one of them whilst they were picking on the Asians that just immigrated. (This was in the late 80's).
In my street, the kids here have friends of all nationalities and they don't treat the kids from the different races differently. It may be their innocence or they are just taught well.
Now if these kids start seeing/hearing all the farce that's going on with this John's/Tahu thing, they might copy them and start using these words or ask questions to others, like older kids, and get the wrong message.
But if this was prevented from the top, it wouldn't have a trickle effect. Prevention is better than cure???
The way I see it, Joey f**ked up and I have no doubt he has learnt his lesson.
But I'm desperately hoping he doesn't lose his livelihood over this. As much as I support Timana for taking his stance, I also believe that Joey is copping far more than he deserves.
I know both of these guys reasonably well and it doesn't surprise me that Timana did this. He is a blatantly honest, open and emotional guy and he has done what he thinks is best. Good on him.
But there is no way Joey is racist. His comments were well out of line but no doubt ingrained in him from the footy culture he grew up in. I'm sure he has learnt a lot from this episode and hopefully everyone can move on now without his entire livelihood being destroyed.
