I'd say that a few of the Sydney teams would be looking at the Parramatta district for a bit of their junior talent. Delboy has told us that there's a couple of our forwards in the Bulldogs' HM team, Tigers are always sniffing around and have grabbed a couple. Roosters have a fair few of their junior players in both their 16's and 18's squads from this year that come from the Parramatta districts.

Luckily that has opened us up to signing players from the Magpies' districts and Newcastle districts. We're also looking at other states more than ever now too. If it didn't cost so much money we could probably run 2 full teams for the Eels.

I'm sure we have plenty of players in the Parra district, but my point was why should it be our main focus.

Is it just coincidence that the 3 most successful clubs of the last decade probably have the worst junior districts in the NRL?

The cost of it would be fairly high. We kinda have an academy in the NT now but most of the development of those kids will be done by their coaches up there and we'll just track their progress.

Why is Parra bothering with an academy for junior players in a predominantly AFL stronghold?

Why is that?

If our players we're recruiting are not from Parramatta, why is our 'academy' is in Parra. Why do we not have one in NZ and another one in Qld?

Why would the Melbourne Storm have an academy in a place where very few of their junior talent comes from?

Just my opinion it should be in Vic to support league in the state. They can still recruit from out of the area

I'm sure you're going to say Melbourne, Manly but not sure who the 3rd is.

Don't forget that Melbourne had to cheat their way to being successful. They also heavily invest in junior recruitment and retention so whilst their district isn't strong they still invest money into bringing in juniors to the club.

Manly really are the exception to every rule in the NRL.

It isn't really an academy we're rather just signing a couple of players that look good up there. So far we've signed 2 players in the 2 years we've been involved with the NT government. Just because you sign players from an area doesn't mean that you have an academy set up there.

I also don't know why you're hung up about the term academy. It isn't this big building or anything.

Why would it help league in Victoria if the Storm's 'academy' was in Melbourne?

If it was located in Perth instead, they would still recruit their players from exactly the same place (predominantly Qld) and in exactly the same way.

Just because the Storm has an academy for players in Melbourne doesn't mean it would help them develop Victorians into playing at the NRL level.

Roosters was 3rd...they don't even have a junior competition.

Given all this, perhaps the best method is the Storm/Manly/Roosters way of identlfy, recruit, develop and retain the higher talented few rather than the pay for the untalented masses to just play the sport (the Parra/Penrith/Newcastle way).

Well what else do you want to call it if it's not an academy (and yes, I already know it's not a big building)?

Poosters have made the finals series only 4 times in the past decade. Surely there's a team who's made more finals appearances? Or are you talking about premierships? I'd say that the Broncos would be the 3rd most successful team over the past decade along with the Storm and Manly as they've only missed 2 finals series in the past 10 years and have won a grand-final and haven't "won" a wooden spoon like the poosters have. The Broncos have a pretty big junior district. Probably the biggest natural one in the competition outside of New Zealand but then they have to contend with Union so I'd say that the Broncos definitely have the biggest League nursery in the competition.

Parra do only focus on only the elite in the competition. Just like the poosters and Manly we have 34 players across the 16's and 18's in our main team. Kinda luckily for us we also have the Western Sydney Academy that we split with Penrith so we have a further 7 or so players playing in the best NSW closed-age competition each week.

The best method to bringing players up into first grade is having a core of established first grade players so that you aren't focusing too much on the young players. As for junior games I'm not sure of the best method but I'd say that you want them getting into as many pressured situations as possible.

You can play semantics on the 3rd best team by yourself. Considering that the Roosters do no have one junior player I think it's safe to say they're talent identification, recruitment, development and retention is going pretty well.

So Parramatta Leagues Club doesn't give 1 cent to anyone to run the Parramatta Junior League competition?

Yep. 'Academy' just means 'junior recruitment and retention system'. Wherever you pull your players from, they need to be developed centrally to best utilise resources. That's why we only have one academy, and the players and staff do most of their work in North Parramatta. Melbourne's happens to be in southeast Queensland, presumably because most of their youth players come from there and it's cheaper to fly and accomodate chief staff from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast, than to pay for all those Queensland kids to stay in Melbourne.

I assume the next generation of Fonuas and Tonumapeias will be spending a lot of time in Queensland.

Solid start for the Eels as they complete their opening set of the game and then force and error from the Sharks as they work it out.

Izzard turns Twal back to the posts before Doolan goes to Amone who then goes out the back to Bevan French. French picks out the gaping hole for Mason Cerruto who strolls in but the Sharks are challenging it!

The challenge is successful. No replays up on the screen at the stadium but obstruction would be the call I believe.

The whole fabric of the game is changing for the worse. That was a try any day of the week. No way is that an obstruction.
Good try to Docker-Clay to make up for it.
