I note that the Sharks have teams in both the Matthews and Ball finals. Good on the Sharks. They obviously don't have either a big junior base or alot of money, so to get both teams in the Grand Finals is a fair achievement on their part. They're obviously doing something right down there in the Shire.

Cronulla actually have one of the larger junior catchments in Sydney from U/6s to U/14s. It falls off a bit after there but they should have a decent talent pool to draw upon as serious talent identification tends to start around the U/14s.

Interestingly some of the junior sharks club A grade sides ( I think 15, 17 maybe 16 ) are playing in the dragons Illawarra / group 7 comps as they don't have enough stronger sides for their A grade sides.

We also have a few Queenslanders, Turnbull being our main man.

Shocked that Filia Utoikamanu didn't earn selection in at least the extended squad. Has been a monster all season playing huge minutes with loads of quality touches.

In general that is a deserving slice of representative honours for this team. Cronulla may have pipped us in the Grand Final but this squad played tremendous footy throughout the season.

Can someone confirm if Reimis Smith has moved to Canterbury please ? If so, would there be some explanation available to the fans ?

Valid point. Most talent in the Harold Matts does qualify for NSW (or even QLD in the odd case like Turnbull) for State of Origin itself seeing as they were either born in NSW/QLD or resided there before their 13th birthday. Not sure if the eligibility rules flow all the way down to the U/16s but if that is the case Filia either moved to Australia (or even inter-state) after his 13th birthday or was overlooked.

Just a guess but I would say we realised we overpaid for him and then f**ked him off.

The NYC salary cap is only $200k for the 20 highest paid players. That's an average of $10k each but in reality there will be about five potential first graders taking up half of that (so about $20k each) with the remaining 15 or so players virtually zero chance of progressing beyond NYC. These guys divvy up the other $100k (less than $7k per man).

So the half dozen NYC players on big money need to be making a massive contribution or your team really suffers. Reimis Smith was not making that massive contribution.

Others on 'big money' (for under 20s) are likely to be Davis, Fuimaono, Aloiai, Dockar-Clay and Twal. Though with ZDC playing for Wenty, he might've been upgraded to an NRL contract (second tier). That's about $75k (almost half the NYC cap), meaning we won't see him in under 20s again, though you would think if we've done that it's because he has agreed to an extension. I guess we'll know if we see him in NYC again.

Kids like Troy Dargan will be in demand (he is an Australian Schoolboy plus now starting in the NYC in the year he turns 18), so we probably had to throw him an upgrade. That could also be why Smith is gone. Likewise, we let Lussick go while still under contract. We wouldn't have done that unless it suit us. And the NYC salary cap is very tight. To bring in one kid with potential you pretty much have to release another.

I'm guessing you can still play Under 20's, even though you're on an NRL Top 25 or Second Tier contract?

Players eligible for NYC who are paid as top 25 players are still able to play NYC, but do not count against NYC cap.

Funnily enough, you can play if you're top 25 but not if you're in the second tier (i.e. on a fulltime contract but outside the top 25). Or more correctly, you could play, but your contract (about $75k) counts against the NYC cap (only $200k).

Players eligible for NYC who are paid as top 25 players are still able to play NYC, but do not count against NYC cap.

Correct.
