He sounds reasonably well spoken. It is a sad fact of NRL that he will sound much dumber 2 years from now after he has hung around with just the boys for too long.

The Parramatta Eels Tarsha Gale girls fought back for their first win of the season in Round Five of the Junior Reps competition.

It was a massive Saturday for Parramatta with all three grades of winning their Round Five matches at Kirkham Oval, Camden.

The Harold Matthews clash with Wests Magpies opened proceedings for the day.

The Eels were first to score after an Aufag Mino offload found Yehya Ayache in support and the hooker plunged over next to the posts.

Wests struck back from the kick off, crossing in the corner after Parra were unable to complete their set.

The Eels took control for the rest of the half with their short passing game providing the platform for the forwards to accumulate big metres through the middle.

They were rewarded late in the half when Saxon Pryke broke through behind the ruck and found Ethan Sanders in support, with the half crossing under the posts. Sanders conversion of his own try took the Eels to a half time lead of 12 to 4.

Wests posted a converted try after the break, but Parra responded soon after when centre Declan Murray finished a big shift to the left. Myles Martin then imposed himself on the game, cracking Wests’ defence and finding fullback Patrick Spence who scored close to the uprights.

A late try to the Magpies was just reward for their determined performance, but the Eels forwards were ultimately too strong, laying the foundation for the win.

The first half of the SG Ball clash was a see-sawing affair, with a double to Eels fullback Tyrone Sau, matched by two tries to the Magpies. All four tries were converted and at half time the teams were locked at 12 all.

Parramatta began the second half with far more composure, completing the first ten sets after the break. Possession is always king, and the Eels converted the pressure into tries.

Larry Muagututia was the beneficiary of smart ruck play to cross for the first of these tries, then Jabriel Kalache delivered a terrific cut out pass for Caleb Coroneos to add the second.

Wests created some concern when their converted try reduced the Eels lead to four, but the Eels kicked away with a spectacular try to Kalache.

A Keahlan Bray bomb was fielded by Daniel Reardon, who found Jock Brazel in support, who in turn passed to Drew Lloyd.

His pass was scooped up by Kalache who feigned the kick then put on a step and a fend to beat two defenders in a charge to the line.

Lloyd, Kalache and Coroneos then combined for Sione Tapu’osi to register his first try for the Eels, finishing the scoring for the match.

There was no shortage of smiles after the Eels defeated the Bulldogs to record their first victory of this season’s Tarsha Gale Cup.

The first half did not begin well for Parra when the Bulldogs crossed for a try after just one minute of play.

The visitors played with great intent and the Eels were struggling against their superior energy.

Parra briefly took the lead midway through the first half via a converted try to prop forward Losalio Sita Payne, but the Dogs rallied with two tries of their own. The 14-6 half time score line was a fair indication of Canterbury’s early domination.

The second half began with more of the same, with the Bulldogs scoring after just two minutes and at 20-6, it was going to be a tough ask for the Eels to rally.

However, rally they did, and after Lucie Whitehead got over the line to narrow the margin five minutes later, all of the momentum was suddenly with Parra.

The completions and running metres from the Eels put pressure on the Bulldogs, leading to three tries in five minutes. Payne scored twice more to bring up her hat trick, before Tahleisha Pugh’s try took the lead out to six points with ten minutes left on the clock.

A final surge from the Bulldogs was repelled by terrific goal line defence as the Eels kept their composure to hold on for the win.

All three grades of Parramatta Junior Reps remain in finals contention after Round Six action against the Raiders in Canberra.

The Eels Tarsha Gale Cup team got off to a flying start when centre Tahleisha Pugh crossed after just eight minutes of play.

In a tight first half, it was the Raiders to score next with a converted try six minutes before the break, giving them a 6 to 4 lead when the teams went to the sheds.

The home team took advantage of Eels errors midway through the second half, scoring two tries in quick succession to kick out to a 12 point lead.

However, momentum was soon shifting as the Eels superior fitness began to provide them with an advantage in the steamy conditions.

Eels Junior Rep Round Six Highlights

In an exciting conclusion to the match, props Losalio Sita Payne and Ruby-Jean Kennard each added tries in the final five minutes.

With just seconds left on the clock, Summah Terare capped a fine personal performance by kicking the pressure conversion to force the draw.

In the following match, the Eels Harold Matthews Cup team were expected to be far too strong for a Raiders team sitting at the bottom of the table.

But Canberra weren’t reading from that script during the first half. Each time that the Eels looked ready to take control, the Raiders came back with a reply.

First half Eels tries to Myles Martin and Blaize Talagi were matched by the home team, and it was only the conversions of Ethan Sanders which provided a four point advantage at the break.

Parramatta’s completions improved in the second half and that proved to be critical as they strangled the Raiders out of the contest.

Playing off a dominant forward pack, halfback Ethan Sanders took his match tally to 20 points with three tries and two conversions during the second stanza.

Myles Martin and Saxon Pryke were others to shine in the 28 to 8 victory.

Sitting in 6th place, the Eels SG Ball team faced a huge battle in their clash with the undefeated, table-topping Raiders.

But the Eels had prepared superbly for this encounter and declared their intentions with a powerful start to the match.

Tries to Peter Taateo, Sione Tapu’osi and Caleb Coroneos in the first ten minutes took the Eels out to a 16 nil lead. Further tries were added by Keahlan Bray and Drew Lloyd, and though the Raiders crossed for two of their own, Parramatta’s 26 to 12 lead at the break was indicative of their superiority.

The highly physical game was taking its toll on both teams, but the Eels were incredibly resilient during the second half.

Injuries left Parramatta with nobody on the bench and 25 minutes still remaining on the clock. Players were pushed out of their normal positions during this period and when another Eel was forced from the field, the team had to complete the final 7 minutes with only 12 players.

However, on the back of an 82% completion rate, a high result on the kick chase, and sheer will to win, it was the Eels who finished strongly.

Four pointers to Peter Taateo, Josh Tuipulotu, Francis Tuitino and Larry Muagututia completed the Eels nine tries for the day. Muagututia’s try capped a big performance from the prop. A field goal to Josh Chappell then finished the scoring as Parra delivered the Raiders first loss of the season.

In a tight top 6, the Eels remain in sixth place, though only one point behind the ladder-leading Raiders.

Tarsha Gale Cup

Parramatta 16 (Tries: Pugh, Payne, Kennard Goals: Terare 2) drew with Canberra 16

Harold Matthews Cup

Parramatta 28 (Tries: Sanders 3, Martin, Talagi Goals: Sanders 4) defeated Canberra 8

SG Ball Cup

Parramatta 47 (Tries: Taateo 2, Tapu’osi, Coroneos, Bray, Lloyd, Tuipulotu, Tuitino, Muagututia Goals: Chappell 5 Field Goals: Chappell) defeated Canberra 24
