Parramatta Eels sign Josh Papalii for 2014

So this new Canberra deadline thing is just a ploy so that they can come out of this situation looking tough and in control, when Josh tells them to get knicked and that he's signed with Parra?

They've got until Round 13 to win him over, why would they suddenly invent a much earlier deadline for themselves, unless they knew he was gone? :D

Read between the lines on the whole scenario?

Canberra want him to ditch his contract with Parra so that he can sign more cheaply with them.
The round 13 clause gives Canberra the right to offer him the same money.
They don't want to offer him the same money (they can't fiddle their cap)
Parra is threatening legal action against Canberra for trying to pressure the guy (illegally) ditch a contract that he signed

In the end, only a doofus would give up $500k per year at the age of 21 in favour of $300k per year. His agent knows the bloke has 10 years of first grade footy in him, and will want to make the most out of his charge as he can. I find it hard to believe he'll ask Parra to rip up the contract - and so Papali is ours.

. PASS ON PAPALII

The last thing the rebuilding Parramatta Eels need is a player who clearly doesn’t want to be there.

They should drop off Raiders second-rower Josh Papalii and let him stay where he wants to be.

This is interesting - it has not been reported what josh wants to do except he was going to make a decision at the end of last week. Are the raiders now calling reporters directly ??

I do sympathize with the Raiders. They've got one of the best and most exciting talents to come through in a long time, and now they've lost him. He's all ours! This guy could be anything. No wonder they don't want to lose him.

Raiders are idiots. Way to stress out the team from mounting media pressure on a young pig leading in to round 1.

The player and his peers will say that it is not affecting them, but we know what even the smallest amount of disharmony can cause.

They will look back on this and see how this could have been better handled.

I don't know why you guys want him so bad its clear he would rather want to stay at raiders as he believes he has a better premiership winning chance and he loves the capital.

Do you really want a guy pulling on that eels shirt that really did not want to leave in the first place?

How is it clear he wants to stay? Because all the insiders and journalists say so? Until he comes out and says I'm staying at raiders as far as we are concerned he wants to be an eel in 2014 because he signed a contract!

He hasn't said a word since he signed everyone else is doing the talking

Well if it was all so clear this entire story would have started there must be something behind it.

End of the day I think if raiders offer him near what he wants he will stay at the raiders, most of the raiders boys are pretty close here and most want to stay together and at the moment the raiders are in the prime to do a premiership push pretty much next 2-3 years or its rebuilding again but at eels you guys are right in the middle of rebuilding phase.

Raiders won't win a premiership or push for it in next few years. They do this all the time. Have a couple good years by making the finals in 6th or 7th spot and then drop away back down to 13th for a couple years. Nothing says to me in their squad especially with furner as coach that they will push for a premiership. Last year they were looking like they were fighting for the spoon till something clicked. Furner was talked about being booted etc. a team that looks like they're going to be last then suddenly clicks to me is just a luck thing (yes we did it in 09 look at us now)

Raiders have some good talented players ill give then that but nothing that compares to a team like cowboys, storm, bulldogs etc

You obviously don't know what's going on here?

He signed a contract to play with Parra for 3 years, commencing 2014.

You might have been right, had the Raiders offered him 'near what he wants' he might have stayed, but they didn't, and so he didn't.
They now have the "right of reply" - but as yet there hasn't been a story or quote or rumour indicating that they'll match it. They just gagged the young bloke and put media pressure on him to get out of his contract [presumably so they can sign him for less?]

I have no idea why he'd do that though...

I would have to disagree with you on that as I believe that last couple years they have been like you said up and down as they have had plenty of young players with hardly any NRL experience but most of these players have matured now and are ready for the next stage.

If you look at the backline it is very handy with fensom,Thompson, papali plenty of strike power and solid defence and rep props in white and shilo and some very good match winning players in the outside backs in ferguson and dugan and throw in one of the most wanted young halves in the comp in S Williams that is a very good team.

Do you honestly think that they will let him go just like that???

He came through the system and Don Furner was on the radio on the weekend and said raiders will put up a fight to sign him.

Mate they have been up and down since 2000. Won't change

2000 - 4th
2001 - 11th
2002 - 8th
2003 - 4th
2004 - 8th
2005 - 14th
2006 - 7th
2007 - 14th
2008 - 6th
2009 - 13th
2010 - 7th
2011 - 15th
2012 - 6th

Raiders have some good young players always have had. And always had a good mix of youth and experience but they have never had a champion player/s (in those years I listed to date) that could get them over the line.

Dugan and Campese are their best 2 options and they're are very injury prone. I just can't see them getting a premiership or pushing for one anytime soon and history supports that

Theres only two players out of each backline of the clubs you mentioned that are any better than what we have, the rest are largely debatable.

It's funny, nobody mentioned a thing when this right of reply stuff happened to us a few years ago, but now its happening to one of the media darling clubs its all bullshit and the rule should be scrapped.

Was hesitant to out dogs in there as their weakness is halves.

Although you may have some talented youth in your squad I can't see canberra winning a title anytime soon.

Personally if we can keep the majority of them, I think we're a year or two off, they haven't spent a great deal of time together in first grade given the injuries to key parts of the squad.

Which ever way it goes, I hope this whole mess is resolved soon...dragging on a bit too long
