Brian Smith the latest to knock back role of Parramatta’s head of football

IT is the NRL top job nobody wants. Brian Smith became the latest man to knock back the vacant head of football role at the Eels this week after Parramatta made what can only be considered a desperate attempt to fill the role given the former coach’s history of failure at the club.
Following knock-backs from Tim Sheens and Peter Parr, the Eels this week interviewed the man that spent 10 seasons coaching Parramatta, from 1997 to 2006, in a back-to-the-future play.
Smith failed to deliver Parramatta a premiership during the decade that made him the club’s longest-serving coach.
His failure to land the club a title — his losing 2001 bid in particular — resulted in him leaving the club as an unpopular figure out west. But that didn’t stop the Eels from making a play for the ex-Wakefield Trinity Wildcats coach after former Tiger Sheens and Cowboys boss Parr turned it down.
Smith, who has not had a full-time role with an NRL club since leaving the Roosters at the end of 2012, politely said, “thanks but no thanks’’.
Cronulla recruitment man Phil Moss is one of the few wanting the seemingly poisoned chalice and may pick up the role by default.
Ex-head of football Daniel Anderson was deregistered for his role in Parramatta’s salary cap scandal.
It is understood interviews for the chief executive and head of commercial roles will start this week.
