With the loophole it was virtually zero risk.As usual Barry is pretty much spot on.
Blind Freddy could see that he was a massive risk.

Yeah if you were happy for the club to pay him out a couple of million dollars. With the loophole it was virtually zero risk.
We paid him something on the cap this year though. The point is it didn't end up being a four year deal from the point of view of our salary cap. Everybody wins.
I don't really see the point of including any payment in the cap if it's for players no longer at a club. I understand the need for an actual pay out where a player is released, but why should it count under the cap? Who benefits from that?I don't agree that this should be counted in the cap.
The cap is supposedly to limit the amount clubs spend on their playing roster in any given year. Once the NRL accepted that Choc could no longer form part of our playing roster, they logically could no longer include his salary in the cap.
This is distinct from who pays out the remainder of his employment contract with us, the insurance company or the club as his employer.
What's wrong with that? Rich clubs need to spend their money somehow. Then what's to stop clubs from signing older players to long contracts they have no hope of seeing out? It's like promising them a job after football.
It was worth it to get some toughness into the playing group. It's only money, we've got heaps of it and we've struggled to find ways to spend more of it on players.Yeah if you were happy for the club to pay him out a couple of million dollars.

Great way to run a business. It was worth it to get some toughness into the playing group. It's only money, we've got heaps of it and we've struggled to find ways to spend more of it on players.
The Watmough deal will go down as the dumbest deal in NRL history. Or if they had a cunning plan, then it backfired.
Lucky we got out of the Foran $1M exit clause deal, otherwise that would have got 2nd prize.
.
Great way to run a business.
Max would be very mad I would think.Imagine bean counter Mad Max right now " WHAT THE ACTUAL F**K !!! IDIOTS !!! "
Being able to offer a player about $2.5M but only have a million or so on the cap has massive benefits. What's the point in that? Wasting your money on a player who is a risk.
The rich clubs prefer to spend their money on a great player who is a lesser risk.

Unlike other rich clubs we were coming from a position of weakness, meaning we had to take bigger risks. And because of the retirement clause it was low risk anyway. What's the point in that? Wasting your money on a player who is a risk.

It's not a business, it's a footy team. Businesses are there to make money. Sporting clubs have other goals.Great way to run a business.

Brad Arthur is smart. Neither the Watmough nor Foran contracts ended up hurting us.
Usain Bolt would be a shithouse purchase, Gronk.
We'd be better off with Caster Semenya. She's much ballsier.
