Parramatta Eels scandal: Bankruptcy expert Max Donnelly speaks out on his job to turn Parramatta around

THE man yesterday charged with turning around the fortunes of the Parramatta Eels says he needs to act urgently to get the club’s “house in order”.
Ferrier Hodgson bankruptcy expert, Max Donnelly, who led the chase for the assets of fugitive businessman Christopher Skase and crime boss Robert Trimbole, was yesterday charged with rescuing Parramatta from years of salary cap rorting and dodgy deals.
In his first interview after being appointed, Mr Donnelly told The Telegraph that the Parramatta Leagues Club administration was “not a typical appointment” for him.
“Financially, there is no suggestion of any issues at the club,” he said. “The matter is to get proper governance at the Leagues Club and the football club going forward.”
His appointment came on an extraordinary day in the history of the NSW club industry, with the entire Parramatta board sacked and replaced by Mr Donnelly at the instigation of NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant.
Mr Donnelly said that while the appointment was still fresh, he had some preliminary ideas of what was required to restore the club’s reputation for good governance, to allow it to become a western Sydney powerhouse.
“The immediate issue is getting the house in order for the future; that’s exactly what has got to happen.”
Both Mr Grant and NRL boss Todd Greenberg last night echoed Mr Donnelly’s words, with Mr Greenberg saying the club needed “a strong back office with the highest standards of governance”.
Meanwhile, two directors, deputy chairman Tom Issa and Andrew Cordwell, resigned from both the Eels board and its parent, the Parramatta Leagues Club board.
Departed chairman Steve Sharp said he hoped yesterday’s announcement would put a stop to months of revelations started by The Telegraph. “I pray that what’s been found in the last three to four months is the end of it all ... I’m looking forward to spending some time quality time with my family,” he said.
Several Parramatta directors were at their normal day jobs when the axe fell, with ILGA announcing the end of the beleaguered board late in the day. While awaiting the decision, one Eels director confessed to “sitting at the pub waiting to be sacked”.
Mr Issa said he would “leave for others to decide” whether the appointment of an administrator was a correct call
