Yes, we have made some greats buys, but our backline is still paper thin.
Apart from Mckinnon & Tahu we really don't have a premiership wining backline.
Grothe has his moments in attack, however he is still extremely vunerable in defense, i noticed this a couple of times this year.
Burt, only a winger or fullback at best, he has speed, but he too can be a liability in defense and really struggles to make an impact againt compressed defenses.
Peterson, a solid winger but will never be a super star, he is todays answer to Joe Bartolo, i hope he goes to Union.
Morris, Who knows, a great ball player, but does have brain explosions and really may not be able to handle one on one situations in the backs in defense.
PJ Marsh, Brillant player, thats offcourse if he gets on the field.
Depth
Anderson, Mateo, Graham all have some potential, however i don't think we will see it for a couple of year.
Graham is natural ball player, he should be 5/8, name one player in Parramatta with a better cut out ball or long pass then him??, he is also a natural hole runner, something we lack.
Mateo, more then likely a lock forward...but can play 5/8, brillant potential however i cannot see him playing 5/8 ahead of graham if Graham is given the chance, that means lock forward his only option...which means wagon will more then likely be there.
Anderson, shows alot of potential, but yet again an unknown quanity.
We have the forwards, but out backs are far from premiership wining material.
Sure we have made some good buys, but it wasn't rocket science to work out we will lack something in the backs, i cannot believe Smith apart from Tahu hasn't addressed this, it is vital!!..particulary when you consider that Vaealiki & Kyon are gone and Tahu is an unkown quanity at centre ( even though i do believe he will succeed).......our depth is pathetic.
Alternatives
Dean Widders to centre as one, a great impact player, but i doubt he could handle 80 minutes of NRL each week, plus doesn't have the footwork or speed to stop opposing centres which are elusive and quick.
Daniel Wagon, he has played centre before and is probably more capable at this position then 5/8, he could be awesome defensively....and he does know how to hit a hole, he reads the play welll........and i do think he could be a vital asset at centre when you consider our forward depth.
If anyone has any other suggetsions feel free to contribute.
