NSW government abandons plan to knock down ANZ Stadium
The former Olympic stadium at Homebush will instead be refurbished and transformed into a rectangular stadium.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has abandoned plans to knock down and rebuild ANZ Stadium but will go ahead with its proposal for Allianz Stadium at Moore Park.
It is understood the former Olympic stadium at Sydney Olympic Park will instead be refurbished and transformed into a rectangular stadium.
The compromised plan was presented to a cabinet meeting on Thursday morning. An official announcement is expected from the Premier at 12.45pm on Thursday.
The decision comes after sustained pressure on the government to back down on its $2.5 billion stadiums policy.
Coalition MPs have been privately expressing their concern over the policy, which has had the backing of the Premier and Sports Minister Stuart Aryes.
A Herald/ReachTEL poll last week found almost 60 per cent of voters opposed the government’s stadiums policy.
More than 53 per cent of voters also felt the Berejiklian government was spending too much on major sporting infrastructure.
MORE TO COME

I don’t give a shit either way about ANZ. However, saying that it’s the right decision because 60% of voters were against it is ridiculous. Our elected officials should make decisions based on sound economic, health, environmental and social benefit, rather than what is popular among the population. The population is full of idiots that have no idea and just because they may want something, doesn’t necessarily make it the right thing to do.

If that was the case, why have elected officials at all. We could have a plebiscite every time a decision needs to be made.

Refurbishing ANZ was actually the original plan. Then it become a knock down and rebuild.

If it means that they make it a true rectangular field but the stands remain as it, then it will still be a shit ground. Roof or no roof cos seats are just too far away.

The original plan was for new steeper stands to be built in front of the existing stands - which to be honest sounds a bit bizarre but my understanding was that it was too costly. I would be interested in seeing what the new plan is.

If it was as simple as that then there wouldn’t have been another option in the first place.
If they had of done the poll before making any decision or having any options they would be doing what they have now decided to do, keeping the majority of voters happy, all with the best financial outcome for the state.

Those idiots vote. As long as this continues to be the case politicians will react accordingly.
