An enormous amount of work has been done so far and tunnelling has begun.

Iconic Sydney pub The Royal Oak Hotel demolished for ‘no reason’

Angry locals who fought against the demolition of a 200-year-old Sydney pub for the new light rail have been issued another devastating blow.

It has been reported the site of a 200-year-old iconic Sydney pub, which was controversially demolished for the new light rail, is no longer needed.

The Royal Oak Hotel in Parramatta was torn down in 2020 to make way for the Parramatta Light Rail.

Angry locals who fought against the hotel’s demolition and lost have been issued a devastating blow, with 2GB reporting that Transport NSW has decided the site of the old pub is no longer part of the light rail route.

Fake news.
Typical News Limited, and what an appallingly written article.

"Iconic Sydney pub The Royal Oak Hotel demolished for ‘no reason’"

No reason? Yet she goes on in the article to give all the reasons as to why it was demolished.........

"Transport NSW maintained it was necessary to acquire the site and demolish the pub because of how close it was to the road, when asked by news.com.au.

A spokeswoman said the pub was in the way of widening the road to make space for the light rail tracks, traffic lanes and footpaths.

news.com.au understands the light rail had not been planned to go through the actual site. (Ha ha!! Go figure!!!) What a f**king dumb comment. It never was!!
“The majority of businesses on Church Street are setback further from the original street kerb which meant we could widen the road without encroaching on their land,” the spokeswoman said.
“Unfortunately, the Royal Oak Hotel building was located very close to the Church Street kerb, and its awning overhanging the footpath.
“Over half of the Royal Oak building was on the road space required to allow for the new transport hub providing light rail, traffic lanes and footpath access for people to get to the many great places in Parramatta.”

The remainder of the land that locals see sitting unused was “not needed”.

“The NSW Government will explore options in consultation with the City of Parramatta Council and the community for the future use of the residual land resulting from the removal of the Royal Oak Hotel,” the spokeswoman said.

As the article does not state, the pub was built on a Church st alignment from the 1800's.

Anyway, it's a laugh that some have fallen for this News Limited and 2GB outrage BS. Stagger Eel got it right that the
proprietors now have a new, quite dedicated architecturally old looking pub across the road, below some apartments.
Maybe the outrageous amount of unused land (lol) could be the site of a new City Extra.

Furthermore, this Suzette Mead whiner would be leading the charge to stop the development of the Leagues Club hotel and PCYBC development.

"
Suzette Meade from North Parramatta Residents Action Group said they understood the site had only been used for storage during construction of the light rail.

“We’ve been seeing it there growing weeds and the light rail not on it, and we drive past it and it’s like a dagger in the heart,” she told Ben Fordham."

Ben Fordham Lol. FMD.

This is the same Ben Fordham who posted pics of a trans football player several months ago who was easily identifiable and ended up with this player suffering massive mental health issues to the point where she was willing to take her own life. Yep, let's quote him and his bullshit stories.

Fordham still gave it air-time even though the claims were wrong.
The journalist could have done a little bit of research and then found it was a non story. Albeit, it was not to be.
The pub was on an alignment that was contrary to the light rail and widening of Church st.
I'm sad it has gone as well. I have many great memories from there and it had a great history but, they have a new premises across the road and Parramatta is getting new modern day infrastructure.
The architecture of the pub was basic and will be hardly missed. The place, although historic, was hardly a landmark.
It was just an old run down beer drinking establishment.
I'll be happy to support their new digs across the road.
The pictures below prove that todays outrage is laughable.
Please do not forget that the people responsible for this story are killing our Leagues Club plans.

It’s not clear from the interview that if the pub was left to remain unsitu that its footprint would encroach upon the light rail as built or not. The angle seems to be that the (residual) land is surplus to needs.

So as always with tabloid journalism, there is a kernel of truth bundled with omission of important facts to form a headline.

Gronk verdict: Sceptical, needs more information.

As @Suitman and I have both shown with our images, the front bar of the Royal Oak and it's awning, were both set forward of the other buildings along Church St. As a result, the road widening and provision of a safe pedestrian area meant the re-alignment of part of Church St into what was previously the front bar area and the removal of the buildings awning. The Stone Real Estate, Star Market, Terrace Building and Aust. Post buildings all remained however a portion of the footpath was lost, as was the 8 parking spots between the pub and Stone Real Estate building.

Could the rear section of the pub remained - possibly, however that was largely the beer garden, gaming lounge and kitchen area so kind of pointless and would have not been functional. What did remain was the original (historic) Cobb & Co Coach Stabling area that formed part of the pub's beer garden.
