Poor diddums. Had to walk through a crowd. That must have been tough for you.
I actually went to the "Parramatta Lanes Festival" last night.
It was absolutely brilliant. It stretched from the Lennox Bridge, south down Church st to Centenary Square and then up into Parramatta Square. Lot's of side streets and back laneways as well. There was so much to see, watch and do.
Live performances with music of all genres every 100 metres or so watched by enthusiastic crowds.
Performing Street artists were scattered around randomly.
There was over 40 pop-up food stalls of all cuisines. The aromas emanating from these stalls was intoxicating.
There were temporary licensed bars.
Everything was perfectly lit with mood lighting and colorful LED'S.
Established restaurants were chock full, many with queues.
Most striking thing I noticed though was the extraordinary multi-cultural diversity of the crowd. All happy. All polite. That's what makes Parramatta great. It was also very family orientated and there were plenty of groups of teenagers of all races as well.
If you actually believe that we can shove Parramatta in our arse and that it is a modern ghetto, well alternatively, I could suggest that you stay in your sterile Shire, enjoy your Georges River/Port Hacking views and One Nation single whitey culture. I'll take the Parramatta modern ghetto over that cultural sweetness any day.
Also,
@Gronk is right. Parramatta is a work in progress. Wait until the Powerhouse museum, redeveloped Riverside Theatre, Light Rail, Metro and all the other currently under construction projects are complete, let alone those that are proposed. Even the Roxy will get a re-boot at some stage.
You seem to forget that only 10-12 years ago, Parramatta actually
was a dump. Its dining highlight's were City Extra and the Leagues Club.
Harry Trigaboff kicked off this revitalisation with the first skyscraper - the 176 mtr tall "Altitude" on the old David Jones site. I take my hat off to the progressive PCC at the time in approving such a ground breaking development.
Parramatta has been all uphill since then.
PS. I ended up having an amazing feed in a Vietnamese restaurant in south Church St at 10.00 pm last night before I headed home. Clean place yet was busy, a free pot of herbal tea and free water, great service and was cheap. 2 courses that I chose from the menu for $30.
Amazing service.
Yep. Parramatta is a ghetto.
