A friend of mine is working at WSIA and they are definitely building with an international terminal in mind.
Indeed they are. It will be International capable from Day 1.
KSIA currently has about 40 000 000 passengers pass through there per year.
Due to curfews, it is fast reaching capacity.

Eventually, when WSA is complete (2nd terminal and 2nd runway), it will be able to handle over 80 million passengers a year. To compare WSA with Avalon in Melbourne is laughable.
WSA is certainly being built to be a fully operational International airport. It will in 2 decades, support an immediate catchment of over 4 million people.
It is why it is being future-proofed with a metro and motorway being built to its front door, from Day 1 of operations.

I'd imagine eventually (and yes, this would be decades) the unspoken plan would be for the Western Sydney Airport to take the bulk of the international flights, and for Mascot to be more domestic (and/or in 50 years shut down and sold off to developers)?

However the consortium of investment funds that own Sydney Airport (among stakes in other airports, apparently) is not going to let go of it's current cash machine to competition easily.
The issue here is that you will have two competing airports, competing for business, so I'm not sure that is the unspoken plan.

The Sydney Airport site is owned by the Commonwealth, the owners of the lease to operate the airport have a 50 years lease with a 49 year option, that commenced in 2002, but they don't get a cent if it is ever sold off to someone else to not run it as an airport. The Commonwealth has little reason to sell it to developers. They could sell it to the State I guess.

The original plan was for the owners of Sydney Airport to own both airports, but Sydney Airport wasn't interested.

I love my team and I love going to our stadium on game day but during the off season things change. I was at Parramatta tonight. There was some festival on and I had to walk through it after dinner with friends who live nearby.

Basically you can shove Parramatta in your arse, it's a modern ghetto. Yuck!!

Poor diddums. Had to walk through a crowd. That must have been tough for you.

I actually went to the "Parramatta Lanes Festival" last night.
It was absolutely brilliant. It stretched from the Lennox Bridge, south down Church st to Centenary Square and then up into Parramatta Square. Lot's of side streets and back laneways as well. There was so much to see, watch and do.
Live performances with music of all genres every 100 metres or so watched by enthusiastic crowds.
Performing Street artists were scattered around randomly.
There was over 40 pop-up food stalls of all cuisines. The aromas emanating from these stalls was intoxicating.
There were temporary licensed bars.
Everything was perfectly lit with mood lighting and colorful LED'S.
Established restaurants were chock full, many with queues.

Most striking thing I noticed though was the extraordinary multi-cultural diversity of the crowd. All happy. All polite. That's what makes Parramatta great. It was also very family orientated and there were plenty of groups of teenagers of all races as well.

If you actually believe that we can shove Parramatta in our arse and that it is a modern ghetto, well alternatively, I could suggest that you stay in your sterile Shire, enjoy your Georges River/Port Hacking views and One Nation single whitey culture. I'll take the Parramatta modern ghetto over that cultural sweetness any day.

Also, @Gronk is right. Parramatta is a work in progress. Wait until the Powerhouse museum, redeveloped Riverside Theatre, Light Rail, Metro and all the other currently under construction projects are complete, let alone those that are proposed. Even the Roxy will get a re-boot at some stage.

You seem to forget that only 10-12 years ago, Parramatta actually was a dump. Its dining highlight's were City Extra and the Leagues Club.

Harry Trigaboff kicked off this revitalisation with the first skyscraper - the 176 mtr tall "Altitude" on the old David Jones site. I take my hat off to the progressive PCC at the time in approving such a ground breaking development.
Parramatta has been all uphill since then.

PS. I ended up having an amazing feed in a Vietnamese restaurant in south Church St at 10.00 pm last night before I headed home. Clean place yet was busy, a free pot of herbal tea and free water, great service and was cheap. 2 courses that I chose from the menu for $30.
Amazing service.
Yep. Parramatta is a ghetto.

I was keenly waiting for this reply...

You really don't like anyone using the "g" word... but fair play, you've responded equally to Avenger about it as you had ten years ago to another poster that I used to know.

Hang on a minute... does that mean that previous poster might have been right with the ghetto comment at the time after all?

Though in all seriousness, it's hard for anyone not to agree that Parramatta is getting better and has a bright future.

Every second residential building is a dump and needs rectification works because of the dodgy building going on. The Sutheralnd Shire isn't sterile buddy, far from it. It's not that type of area anyway. It's a place to live not to work. And how the f**k would you know because you never come here and are more than likely relying on stereotypes from the 70's.

BTW mate I work at Parramatta and have been for a while now and I'd take the city or inner city any day. It's not even a contest.

Just my opinion, Suity. Love our team more than you can believe but socialising in the area sucks massive arse. And quite frankly I don't feel safe and as you may know I'm no shrinking violet mate.

That's fine if that is your opinion. I just happen to disagree.

Firstly, every 2nd residential building is not a dump and has not been built by dodgy developers. In fact, the quality of current development is very high. Did you not see my link to a current development the other day? Dyldam have built a couple that can be considered dodgy. Jean Nassif's Toplace started a tower, and that was halted when unapproved works were discovered. He is now hiding in Lebanon.
I do however laugh at your claim that you feel unsafe in Parra. Harden up pussy. Parra is not the Balkans.

As for me never coming to the Shire - you are wrong again.
My sister (Dundas raised) and her husband (Wentworthville raised) live in Bonnet Bay and have done for over 20 years in a lovely house overlooking the water. I am there regularly for family gatherings, parties for their kids and also get togethers with their friends that I am invited to.
I have lost count of the number of times that I have had to bite my tongue and refrain from replying to the racist discussion at these "get together's or "gather's as they call them. All by privileged whiteys. As an example, they are all furious that Chinese developers are being allowed by SSC to build unit developments and have signed petitions against in protest. Fearful of The Shire becoming less white. I'm not kidding, and it sickens me.
Sounds like you've been tarred by the same elitist Shire brush.

So your sister has some gathering with some people who don’t like Chinese people which means I’ve now been tarred? We have two Chinese families in my street and we see each other all the time. I don’t even look at them as different to any of us. There is also a Muslim Lebanese family across the road from us and we look out for each other all the time with lawn mowing and garbage days when either are on holidays etc.

Now all of a sudden I’m some white elitist and racist because I don’t like Parramatta.

Get a grip mate.

I'm actually intrigued to know what the long term strategy is going to be with two airports in Sydney, as both the current owner (the Commonwealth Government) and current lessee of the Kingsford-Smith site has no intention for at least the next 60-70 years of it not being operated as an international airport.

Is the Western Sydney Airport just going to end up being for domestic, low-cost carriers and freight? Why would international carriers fly in and out of there when they can continue to fly into Kingsford-Smith?? Avalon is closer to the Melbourne CBD than this new airport is to the Sydney CBD, but it has never taken off (pun not intended) in what is essentially a similar size city.

WSA is a 24 hour no curfew airport will make international flights easier to schedule.

I’d like to know why two people that are Dundas and Wentworthville raised chose the Sutherland Shire? They must like the sterile life but not Chinese builders.

Hopfully they will come to their senses and choose the bright lights and big new Jack city that is Parramatta. Less travelling time for you @Suitman.

🤣

In reality, how many people are really going to want to fly in between 10pm and 6am? Not me.

All the sneaky Chinese that will want to come in to the Shire once the Chinese developments that Suity mentioned are up and ready.

Those sneaky sneaks!

I actually want them to come because wherever they settle, prices tend to rise. They have plenty of money and obviously great taste. Look at Hurstville, Chatswood, Castle Hill and Rose Bay.

I’m going to Hong Ha and having a roll as we speak. Parra is much safer during the day.

Yep, no more sitting around Sth East Asian airports waiting for the red-eye to depart at 10pm local time so you can arrive into Sydney after the curfew lifts.
OK fine, but can I get a zoom zoom dedicated airport train to Central Station ? This is what I want, otherwise I will continue to use mascot.

Ever been to Hong Kong ? Sweet. You go to their version of Martin Place Station. Go to a different level and check-in to your international flight and load your bags.

You then go about your day enjoying Hong Kong or Kowloon. When it is close-ish to your flight you jump on the zoom zoom train and travel the 40km in f**k all time. Go straight to immigration and then to your gate. Noice.

Most airports around the world are 25-30 mins drive away from the city centre on the outskirts.

Sydney is one of the rare ones basically 5-10 mins away from the city centre.
