How would you define Parramatta's boundaries so you can do a head count ?

Adelaide's area is 1827km2

So the radius from the centre is 1827/3.14159= 581.5km (diameter)

√ 581.5 = 24.115km radius

Parramatta is approx 25km fro Sydney CBD, 25km to Menai.

Sorry, cant see how Parra can get 4th largest population ever unless it claims most of Sydney Metro as it's own.

Brisbane's metro is 15826m2 or a radius of 70km !

Perhaps they were talking about population densities. If so Parra would need to knock off Perth and Adelaide to achieve that goal.

Assuming it meant city of Parramatta of which the boundaries are defined, not greater Parramatta or greater Adelaide which includes the burbs, but then again I didn't write the article.

Gronk, I think they tend to define largest cities by number of people? Not by area covered.

The trick with Parramatta is that it simply falls under greater Sydney by simple measure. So to measure it would mean a breakdown of the other major metro areas into their more local government areas.

According to this http://forecast.id.com.au/parramatta/population-summary Parramatta currently has over 230k (and you can see the suburbs constituting Parramatta city). And according to this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_..._largest_local_government_areas_by_population that would put Parramatta in at 11th overall.
The projection on that first page indicates that by 2031 Parramatta will exceed the current population numbers of current 4th place Canterbury Bankstown. Assuming no growth there, that would put Parramatta in the top 4.
I'm not really up to speed on this stuff as well as many, but I do believe that would be a fanciful belief - Canterbury area is projecting new development like crazy over the next 10 or so years, new towers going up everywhere, and logically one might expect to see a population boom in that LGA?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's what they are getting at with 4th largest talk.

There's plenty of growth (ghetto over-development) going up in Canterbury-Bankstown, and more to come.

Agree. urban growth in NSW (or even Sydney) is not a Parra-specific thing. But perhaps the skyscraper-hype is?

Nah, the hype probably only stems from the people who hang out on a skyscraper forum, and then post the links and pretty (artist impression) pictures of every proposed new building in this thread, which was originally about the new Western Sydney Stadium upgrade....

;)

Your result (i.e. the radius) is correct, however I don't really think the diameter of Adelaide is 581.5km. Isn't the radius simply half the diameter?

Our weekly look at the stadium news from Australia and New Zealand.

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the new Western Sydney Stadium to be built on the site of (the now almost demolished) Pirtek Stadium has been released with public submissions being accepted until early next month. The plan confirms a new 30,000 seat venue, inclusive of 3,000 seats reserved for corporates. Included in the EIS is an anticipated annual events schedule, which notes up to 100 total events each year. The major tenants will be the Parramatta Eels (NRL) and Western Sydney Wanderers (A-League), playing around twelve (12) home games each per season. Interestingly, the EIS indicated two other NRL teams also playing some of their home games at the new stadium; a controversial forced rationalisation of home grounds that has often been mooted, yet never received much public support. Possible clubs in line for this move could include Penrith as well as the plethora of clubs that currently play at least some of the games at ANZ Stadium; Canterbury, Wests Tigers, St George Illawarra and South Sydney.

The document also envisages rugby union utilising the new stadium, with the NRC Rams playing three games at Parramatta and the NSW Waratahs taking one game west from Allianz Stadium at Moore Park. Three outdoor concerts could also be held at the stadium, along with a few W-League or FFA internationals, with the remainder of events being “Captain’s Runs” – basically a training session. Projected total patronage for the new stadium will likely be over 1 million per annum, which is due to be open in 2019.

Interesting. I'd say Penrith and probably West Tigers make most sense to bring some of their games to our new stadium.

Though they could always put on a Bulldogs-Wanderers double header when the seasons overlap, so that the Kennel-RBB can just stay in the one location for that round?

I'd like to see a WSW and NZ Maori Vs Tonga double header.

Well, I did a walking tour of Parra CBD yesterday before the rain unloaded. Got off the train at Parra station where that whole block in Darcy St is gone. They were digging up part of Church St near that dumbass fountain too. Ventured down to Lennox Bridge to cop a gander at the Meriton' scraper then across to the Parra Stadium demolition site. Both projects are progressing well. DJ's have been well and truly erased. I won't recognise the area in a few years time.
