Mad merkins were at Sydenham at ridiculous o’clock this morning to catch the first train.

Oiii!! I was one of those mad merkins!!
I caught the 4.37 am Tallawong service. I got on at Showground at 4.51.
The train was pretty packed. I stood next to Howard Collins, Rod Staples and the boss of the Metro who's name escapes me atm. There was quite a cheer on the train when it left Chatswood.

So, what did you think?
Is it your first time on the metro?
Martin Place is mind blowing, eh?
What was striking to me was a) the size of these stations, the width and the capacity to hold far more people than Sydney has. Clearly future proofed for a population of 10 million in XX years. The second was the acceleration out of central. I was standing up and you could really feel the surge.

So I got on at Chalmers Street entrance, adjacent to the L stop on Elizabeth Street and it was a small hike past the T suburban trains to platforms 26/27 M. From there I waited just a few mins for a train north. I thought it waiting longer at Gadigal than a normal T train ? When I alighted at Martin Place I walked to T4 so I could come out on the western end of platforms 1 & 2.

So I will need to explore more of Martin Place towards Hunter Street exit another time.

Martin Place T4 still needs a good gernie. The contrast is dramatic and feels like a 1970's station even more now.

Pretty good description.
I went through the old Martin Place station this morning and couldn't agree more. It looks seriously grubby and could do with a decent pressure wash. That is, compared to the new Martin Place obviously.
I caught a ST from Martin Place to Central this morning and the difference to the Martin Place Metro is miles apart.
Obviously, that's no shock considering that the two systems have been built 50 years apart, but it is a reminder that far more needs to be done to keep our aging double deck rail system up to date.
Successive govts from both sides have been doing well in improving accessibility, but there is so much more that needs to be done.

One thing I noticed during the peak this morning was the amount of people with phones out, filming stuff and taking pics. There was a serious wow factor for those that were seeing this infrastructure for the first ever time.

Yeah there were lots of long lenses at Central.

Then there were people who were obviously excited, but pretended that the experience was meh. Nerd up merkins and be proud.

Metro doing exactly what it was meant to do. All carriages pretty much at crush capacity from Martin Place to Cherrybrook.
The great thing is that it has the capacity to add two extra carriages to each train (the stations have been built to accommodate this) and reduce 4 minute services to 2 minute services or even every 90 seconds), so it has the ability to more than double the current capacity.
Chatswood has been the busiest station so far, with commuters on the north shore line swapping from ST's to SM for a 13 minute travel saving trip to the city.
Why wouldn't you?

Interesting to note that the service arrives at Tallawong at 5.52 pm and begins its return service to Sydenham at 5.53 pm. The benefit of an automated driverless system.

I ventured into the bowels of Martin Place Station yesterday, yes it’s like a freakin airport down there.

I found it intriguing that there is an entire shopping mall with maybe 100 retail spaces. It will be interesting to see what type of retailers take those spaces in the coming months.
