Given the time Tuilagi is getting, I think we're better off having Hands in the 17. Lussick is going to be a better player for us if he only has to play for 50-60 minutes a week.

I agree. I'm a Hands fan - just for the options it gives us, including the chance to rest and refresh Lussick for 20mins.

If Cartwright and Lane are capable for doing 80mins on the regular, and Matterson is only getting 25min or less in the middle rotation, then Matterson has time up his sleeve to cover an edge injury and we can acommodate Hands on the bench (in Tuilagi's place).

A bench of Hands, Paulo, Matterson and one other middle (currently Moretti, potentially Greig if he can get himself fit) to round out the 17 I think is pretty strong.

Our issue is having our Best 17 (I'd say 19 all up) available every week, because our Best 17 is Top 4 material, but if we need to get more than 1-2 out of that Best 17 then we tend to just be too weak to cover those losses.

Over a long season I think that is our Achilles Heal, because it's unrealistic to expect your Best 17 to play every week.

It's no coincidence that we were f**ked after 50 minutes in this game and the match against the Raiders, which is as long as Lussick should be on the field in any match.

The same thing will continue to happen if he has to play more than 50-60 minutes each week.

Last week was more luck than good management.

Too much has to go right for us when Lussick has to play 80 minutes for us to come close to winning.

Yep, I don't see why BA had to change the way he started the season, with Hands there to share some of the 9 duties.

For the sake of Moretti's 20mins giving Hopgood a break, he should be able to cover that with 20mins more of Matterson- who was routinely playing 60mins last year... or if that's too much exclusively in the middle split the extra 20min between Matterson, Offa, RCCG and Paulo.

Lussick at 80mins is the weakest link around the ruck in attack and in defence.

Big minutes from Tuilagi at this level, Makatoa, and Doorey off the bench in his first game back.

Guymer and Keir who have both been doing 80min pretty consistently weren't called on to do so this week.

Could well be... the missed tackle stats aren't yet in!

Though we made three interchanges in the 17mins betwen Cini's try and when the Roosters drew in front.

More minutes this week from Matterson (obviously), as well as Hopgood, Ofa, and Paulo.

Less from Lussick, and from Lane - although not sure what BA would have done in the bench plan with Tuilagi and who would be given a spell if it wasn't for Lane's TIA?

Why do we decline after making grand finals?

Grand final yearWins next seasonWins two seasons laterWins three seasons later
19861987: 12 wins1988: 8 wins1989: 11 wins
20012002: 10 wins2003: 11 wins2004: 9 wins
20092010: 10 wins2011: 6 wins2012: 6 wins
20222023: 12 wins2024: 3 (on track to win 9)2025 Premiers

The last grand final that wasn't followed by an immediate decline was forty years ago:

Grand final yearWins next seasonWins two seasons laterWins three seasons later
19841985: 16 wins1986: 16 wins1987: 12 wins

It's not very exciting.

Ray Price played 259 games across 11 seasons for Parramatta. In that time we played in 10 final series, 7 grand finals and won 4 premierships. A record of over 90% finals and over 60% grand final appearances, as well as over 35% premiership record.

Mick Cronin played 216 games across 10 seasons for Parramatta. In that time we played in 9 final series, 6 grand finals and won 4 premierships. Obviously zero wooden spoons. A record of 90% finals and 60% grand final appearances, as well as over 40% premiership record.

The one season they didn't make the finals, they were only one position away from the finals (6th in 1980).

In the 29/30 seasons prior to their arrival, we only played in 6 final series (around 20%), for no grand final appearances (and obviously no premierships). We won 11 wooden spoons (around 37%).

In the 37 seasons since their departure, we have played in 15 final series (around 40%), and 3 (8%) grand final appearances (and obviously no premierships). We won the same amount of wooden spoons as grand final appearances in that time. Incidentally, Brad Arthur has been a part of 67% of those wooden spoons the club has had since both Price and Cronin joined the club.

We could really do with a couple of winners like Pricey and Crow at the moment...

Jarryd Hayne has been involved in 100% of them.

These days they would either be pushed out by the salary cap or their massive contracts would push other gun players out. How the f**k did the Eels keep all those eighties players anyway? I suspect we had resources we don't have access to any more, at least in relative terms. Professionalism washed poker machines away as any sort of competitive advantage.
