Parramatta to move Dragons blockbuster to Homebush

Parramatta are set to surrender home-ground advantage for their blockbuster season opener against St George Illawarra, with plans to move the game to Homebush bay.
The Herald can reveal that Eels chief executive officer Paul Osborne wants the fixture moved from the 20,000-seat capacity Parramatta Stadium to ANZ Stadium, which has a capacity of 82,000.
"I want to move it," Osborne said.
"Sometimes you've got to do things that are in the best interests of the game.
"It's going to be a massive game and we want as many fans to be part of it as possible.
"It's the opening to the NRL season and the match is bigger than our individual club.
"It will be a great opportunity for the supporters of both clubs to turn up in numbers."
Had the game remained at Parramatta Stadium, tens of thousands of fans - including schoolchildren with free passes - would have been locked out from a marquee match to mark the opening of the 2010 season.
The issue came to a head the last time the teams played. The Dragons and the NRL refused to shift their semi-final against the Eels from Kogarah Oval, which has a capacity of just 18,000.

It is estimated that decision cost them 30,000 patrons and up to $1 million in revenue.

Osborne slammed the decision at the time, saying clubs could not afford to be knocking back supporters and revenue during a tough financial time for the code. Two weeks later, the Eels-Bulldogs semi-final attracted a crowd of 74,549.
"That played on my mind a bit, the fact that we criticised [the Dragons] last year," Osborne said.

Better decision for the game, we need to expand these blockbusters and maximise the crowds and revenue from them. A crowd of 20k at Parra would of looked good but realistically this clash should be able to pull at least 35-40k at ANZ, a smart move.

If it was a Sunday arvo I reckon they'd go close to 50k at ANZ. Friday night they'll be hoping for 30.

IMO that's the wrong attitude by Osborne. His job is to look after the interest of his club, not the game. It's sad that home advantage isn't as valued as it is in other sports. If I was a Parra fan - I would much rather play at home, giving your team the best possible chance of winning.

In saying that, as an opposition fan I'm looking forward to a huge crowd for opening night of the season.

Why is it the wrong attitude with Osborne? Better attitude than Dousts.......
Not really the game doesnt mean that much for the eels, Osbourne did agree wiht doust that even he wouldnt move a game which meant a home game or a minor premiership for the eels.
Also the nrl would hope there isnt any rain on the opening night

Tickets are already on sale for Parra/NRL members, isn't this a bit too late?

Well, I work 200m from ANZ stadium, so I'm glad Osborne doesn't care about keeping his home games at home.
I'd still rather travel 2 hours to Kogarah than walk 2 minutes to ANZ. I'd rather miss out and watch Saints play at Kogarah on the TV.

For a big bloke, he sure loves to bitch like a little girl.

Not a bad idea by Parra. After all the Parra v St George game was sold out last season and they had to turn people away.

That was at Easter I know, but Parra had not been on their dream run or shown any promise of doing so. Which means it should be a fairly popular fixture.

My Mrs was campaigning for this every time the topic came up, now she's disappointed it's happened, as she doesn't have reason to hate Parra anymore.

I'd rather see the result decided on a drunken coin toss than personally have to watch a game at ANZ. The place is a f**king disgrace and completely unsuited to League.

However, if a crowd of 35,000 are going to turn up and give League a huge pay day, then I'd rather that than 20,000 at Parra's ground.

It's also on the Telegraph's website, teasing it as the lead story in Thursday's paper & Phil Rothfield is claiming it as an exclusive. Anyone know if tickets went on sale today as advertised ? ( with Parramatta Stadium as the venue )

 I can see how - capacity for more fans than any other NRL ground, an excess of toilets, plenty of food, drink and bar outlets, lots of entry gates, good surface...

yep, completely unsuited
