Smith told Fairfax Media on Tuesday he had meant no offence and "no offence was taken".

"Gallen said something about ‘I ran at him three times and he beat me once but I beat him twice’. I wrote that I didn't think that was the situation," Smith said.

"I thought after he got smacked the first time he showed some smarts. He avoided that sort of physical contact by running towards him but at the last minute he changed direction, which is what a smart old bull does.

"Out of that has come whatever has come. I took no offence to the comment made."
