Paul Gallen vs Brian Smith

I recall a while ago, likely before the asada stuff came out, Smith went on record on the topic of drug use in the NRL and said that an average size forward junior at Parra when he was there who never looked like amounting to anything now looks like a superstar, built like a tank and racking up 200+ metres a game, you figure it out. Something like that.

Basically he has publicly gone on record pointing a massive finger at "mystery forward who fits all the categories that Paul Gallen does" as a drug cheat before. They got beef.

Shortly after the original announcement, but yes, there is some very bad blood between these two.

Brian Smith f*cked up in not thinking that Paul Gallen could make it as an NRL player. Even if it turned out he was a drug cheat his entire career, that is not what has made him a great player. ElephantJuice might give a player slight advantages, but they certainly don't change someone from being nowhere near good enough for first grade to one of the best players in the game.

At the end of the day Paul Gallen is a bloke with an amazing work ethic and attitude toward the game. That's why he made it into the NRL. I could totally see Brian Smith resenting the fact that he had one of the games best forwards in his ranks and let him go because he couldn't identify the potential that he had. I would also hardly say that Paul Gallen is built like a tank. Not compared to some of the other blokes running around in the NRL. He's just a short stocky merkin that plays well above his weight because of his work ethic. According to Wiki he is only 103kg. Sharks site has him at 104kg. Meanwhile Greg Inglis is a 105kg fullback and it was only a few years back that he was a tall and lanky (still incredibly strong) 90kg centre. He's pretty average still for an NRL player, and pretty small for an NRL forward. He's a a great forward in the NRL for many reasons, but it's not because of the size of his body. That's for sure.

I saw Gallens first game for the sharks.
I hadn't even heard of him.
He was clearly a gifted footy player...ran very hard...and played very hard.
Smith must be blind.

Nobody is questioning his form as a player, he is just a complete numb nuts outside the game.
