Mate. I heard that from Brisbane fans at my first suncorp game. I was sitting behind the goal posts.
I hear that every game and you can see that people are just looking at the ref and seeing if they are inline, not that the ref is going back 12 from the play the ball. (that being said tonight Brails was getting pinged for being offside and he was offside every damn time)
i have no issue with the backchat penalties. But some of the penalties were literally done to make a point from greenberg.

And what is wrong with making that point??
I’ll go back to what I posted earlier and that coaches, media & fans have been saying for a while that the game is a mess and it needs cleaning up. We’re now getting that. I totally accept that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and the refs may be nit picking(nothing new there, goes back to Harrigan pinging players for offside by a few cms from kick off)but the point is being made - teams have to adjust (acknowledged by Bellamy in the press conference). So if the coaches can accept it(Flanagan also acknowledged it)then the message is working. It’s now about execution.

Have to feel that the play-the-ball enforcement is long overdue. However some of the other penalties are not so good. In fact pedantic. If they (refs) haul back the other myriad of penalties I'm still ok with the play the ball with foot enforcement. It's important. Just don't think the coaches/players have worked their tactics to use this to effect in a game situation yet.

The 10m penalties are called more because of the play of the ball enforcement, it's taking longer for players to do it so the ref has to keep an eye the defense not creeping up.

Need to crack down on one more area, play the ball on the mark, not take two steps forward trying to f**k with the markers.

Then you’d end up with less wrestling as the markers aren’t trying to hold as they get into position.

Yep it is a combination of the coaching emphasis on defensive line speed over many years and the fact that they never had to worry much about getting the timing right with the line speed.

Andrew Johns works with the coaches so he is not going to criticise them instead he takes the easy option of blaming the refs and the NRL.

I hope the penalties continue.

Totally, it makes such an impact. They move forward a metre and they also often move to the side making it nearly impossible for the markers to be square. On the try line this can be fatal.

If you want a fast play the ball you can move backwards into the territory you have earned as far and as fast as you like. You cant move forward into what is essentially an offside position. They do it and blame the fact there are defenders laying in the ruck. But that is the refs problem to deal with by penalties not the players by moving offside.

Agree. Walking off the mark used to be a penalty, but the powers that be decided to just get them to go back and play it - again, to reduce penalties. Now you have some players who take 2 steps forward and one to the side before they play the ball. Make it a penalty again I say.

No... The penalty-a-thon won't stop, nor will discipline improve, until they start putting players in the bin. Its been brought up plenty of times in here.

Smith is leading the penalty conceded count atm. Yet they only bin him for back chat. Two sharks are also in that list, Townsend and Brailey. (along with two bunnies - Burgess and Crichton) Bin these pricks. If that's what it takes to get the message across, lets go down that path. I don't want this to drag on and on. The reality of this is they have been coached to slow it down. All the refs are doing is still allowing this to happen. Putting them on their arse for 10 is the answer. You have to blow the penalties, but after 3-4, put someone out.

The NRL need to make an announcement at the end of this round stating the players are not heeding the warnings and they will now start binning players for continual penalties from round 5 onwards. Keep escalating matters until they get the message.

I think you’ll find the vast majority of fans are in favour of the clampdown. It’s the usual suspects from channel 9 and some from the News Limited papers who whinge constantly. They need to build this up into some huge issue so they can justify running a story about it every day of the week.

No whinging from me either, it's the early season/possible entire season that we've needed to have for a long time.
The disrespect from the players to the officials is appalling, I'm glad they're clamping down on it. They should take it a step further and also penalise unsportsmanlike conduct more heavily like throwing the ball at another player's head or not handing the ball over when it's a change of possession.
Ditto to what was said earlier too about players walking off the mark.
I'd love to see the introduction of the 5 minute sin-bin to give the refs a bit more bite.
I just hope that the refs stick with it and don't revert back to the same old routine after the first few rounds, like has happened in the past so often.

I never wanted changes, particularly play of the ball which I couldn’t care less for.
I think that the nrl and the way it tinkers with rules hasn’t been a good look for the game.
You’ll find that those of us disagreeing with so many calls it’s because we think it’s going to last and that players and coaches aren’t really going to change.

I understand the idea behind doing this I just don’t like it’s going to work.

It's making the game look a little like Union at the moment but I think it's temporary. Teams will soon learn the important stance the NRL are trying to take on it. 30 penalties in Sharks Storm game, but hey, these two teams were the top 2 in penalties conceded last year. Should be no real surprise to anyone.
