Penalty Blitz

Lol.

You’re trying to change the entire way rugby league is played.

Since the birth of rugby league it’s been refereed for the feel of the game. Even with this “referee crackdown” it’s still as bad if not worse than it was in round 1. Refs still make the same mistakes blah blah

Penalise the obvious infringments but don’t turn the entire game into penalty ball so it’s completey unwatchable

This is complete bullshit.

That’s what’s been lost in this.
What?! Do you not think maybe there's errors because the added fatigue due to stop start? I mean seriously.

Roosters, Cows, Storm, Sharks, Eels teams that somehow put it together in the finals last year now are suddenly shithouse at the fundamentals.
*massages temples*

Error count in that game was a combined 21.
This is why I'm not pleased, it's like watching under 13s.

Eh

Wanna point out which part you disagree with

This “referee crackdown” will just bring in another dimension of cheating if you call it, ie milking (we’ve already seen a fair bit)

Just admit you can’t properly police a game of rugby league unless you want 40+ penalties every single game. The players won’t change when fatigue is a main contributing factor to these ruck penalties

Hang on. If there’s more stoppages there’s more chance of a break. Fatigue shouldn’t enter into it.
And the teams all talk up ‘toughest preseason, fittest we’ve ever been’ etc. so I think calling it fatigue is a bit much.

Breaks in play would mean less fatigue, no?

Ok well what's your explanation for the sudden increase of errors?
And in any case it does kill momentum.

Do you have any stats on errors for first 4 rounds last year?

Top 4 teams for errors had roughly 11.8 a game throughout 2017.

Top 4 teams in 2018 have roughly 12 a game. Surely teams make more errors early in the season than later in the season?

Do you? I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Only full season stats. See edited post. 12 per game for the season compared to 11.8 for the first 4 rounds for the teams with the most errors.

Hardly significant and you'd expect more errors at the start of the season than the end.

What about 2016 compared to 2017.
That still shows an increase, surely it's naive to think the changes aren't affecting teams' momentum somehow.

Only like 10.4 in 2016.

I still think you are more likely to make errors early in the season than later.

Ok that works in your favour, seems like the increase is a trend.
Yes it is but 28 still seems ridiculously high.

Mmm no since the birth of the game it has been refereed to the rules.

The NRL and Origin is about the only forms of the game that aren't. It's refereed to what the bosses think will be the most entertaining. Problem with that is once they say 'don't bother penalising this this and this because the fans don't want to see so many penalties' then the players get away with anything and we end up with wrestleball shit.

The whole point of low penalties is the Origin spectacle....

This blitz isnt just about the storm....it was in most games including giving the donkeys a win against the tigpies.

Yeah I loved watching every kick chaser get taken out in Origin last year and every play-the-ball taking ten seconds. So entertaining.

Is there an increase in errors? What do the stats indicate?
Yes but then the previous year had an increase too so at this stage it is inconclusive.

Could go into more depth like individual teams and players, but I cbf looking for the stats at this stage.

How is that the ref's fault? They are professional players, learn how to catch the f**king ball. Don't want fatigue or errors? Let's go back to unlimited interchange then.

Me either. And I don’t want to argue with you as I like a lot of stuff you post.
Let’s see how it pans out.
