Penrith Panthers to become the Western Sydney Panthers?

Phil Gould is f**king up your club.

It doesn't matter. Easts are Easts, not Sydney. If they change the name, fans will always know them as Penrith, not Western Sydney.

Don't know why people hate mergers? Merging with Illawarra was the best move St George ever made. I hope we stay merged.

It's not really a merger. It was more a takeover and semirelocation. Your first name. Your mascot name. Your logo. Your jersey. Your colours. Your history (0 Illawarra premierships).

In return for a seldom used hyphen you got a second base and a massive source of juniors and members. Of course it was a good move by St George.

Phil Gould made a claim that the Panthers would be the biggest Sydney nrl club within a few years. Not sure where he thinks they will achieve it short of merging with parra, bulldogs and wests!

PR like it or not sometime in the future their will be only one team representing the western suburbs of Sydney.

Phil Gould is hoping it's the Western Sydney Panthers.

If this is ever the case then no one can argue that the name should revert to the original club that covered the western surburbs or west sydney and that is the Western Surburbs Magpies - a foundation club. Shite, we splat out all these other clubs from our loins.

Balmain can merger with Souths and Easts and become the Sydney City whatevers.

Go the mighty magpies (c'mon maggies - go the pies)

PS: Easts, Souths and Balmain can take Canterbury with them because we don't want them:)

Well the income for starters. We have offloaded under performing clubs. Look at our membership numbers increase despite being rubbish. We have made the semis 9 times ever so not even past glories help us.

Look at our catchment area no other sports there. We go from Lithgow to Blacktown up to Wisemans Ferry. Plenty of ways to grow.

Might have something to do with the fact that about 2,000,000+ people will be moving into that outer Western Sydney fringe by mid century.

The teams that will benefit are Tigers (growth around Campbelltown), Parramatta (growth to NE) & Penrith (growth both North & South).

That's what GWS are hoping to capitalise on but the problem is AFL will never be the number one sport in Sydney as long as there are 9 other NRL teams carving up the city into distinct regions whilst simultaneously growing to become city-wide supported teams.

So to suggest it would happen is lunacy.

So Panthers Pizza is named from the RL team? Or Panthers motors? They don't even sponsor the club. The Pizza shop is soccer supporters. Motors Dragons. The Panther is a legend of the region so I wouldn't rule it out.

Are you are assuming that in 2050 their will still be 9 NRL teams playing out of Sydney?

My thought is that we wont have nine Sydney teams in the competition by 2020 let alone by the middle of the century.

Name me one pro sporting team in any code that has ever taken a name already in use in that city. It has never happened in the history of australian sport. So to suggest it would happen is lunacy.

GWS didn't become the GWS Eels. The Storm didn't become the Melbourne Magpies. The new NRL team in Perth if and when it happens won't become the Perth Eagles.

It has never happened and it never would happen. It does not help your branding to be confused with an existing team if you're trying to build a serious team.

Melbourne Tigers.

f**k off.

That's why Clover Moore gave the Swans a ticker tape parade and not the Tigers, because they didnt represent all of Sydney ffs.

And Clover Moore isn't the mayor of a council that represents all of Sydney.

As for Panthers just how far to the west & to the east does their area go? Lithgow to Seven Hills?

Calling the team just Penrith might be turning off some potential sponsors & fans from what is a huge area.

West Sydney Panthers could be a good move.

WTF are you talking about? Who or what are the Melbourne Tigers and what does it have to do with anything I said in the post you replied to.
This is most possibly the most stupid post I have read on the internet.

He answered your question.

f**k off.
