Penrith release Grant to join Rabbitohs

There's one off the list!!!!!

South Sydney appear to have locked in a replacement for rugby union-bound Sam Burgess, with Penrith prop Tim Grant to join the Rabbitohs next season.

The Panthers on Friday agreed to release Grant from the final two years of his contract to link up with the Redfern-based NRL club on a four-year deal from 2015.

He will, however, see out the remainder of the season with the Panthers.

The western Sydney outfit said Grant had approached club officials "several weeks ago" about a possible release, but eventually agreed to stay until the end of 2016.

"However, after a change of heart he again approached club bosses to ask for a release, which has today been formalised," the Panthers said in a statement.

"The Panthers respect Tim's decision and wish him all the best for his future."

The 26-year-old has played 114 first-grade games for the Panthers since his debut in 2007, as well as two State of Origin appearances for NSW.

Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire said Grant would add plenty of firepower to his forward pack, which will be without Burgess next season after he signed a three-year deal with UK rugby outfit Bath.

"Tim has represented his state and played over 100 first grade games, so he will bring experience to our pack as well as strong defence and plenty of size," Maguire said.

"He will add strength to our front row rotation, and we're looking forward to him joining our squad next pre-season."

Grant said he was excited about the move but admitted he still had some unfinished business at the foot of the mountains.

"I still have a job to do here at Penrith for the remainder of this season, and I'll be doing everything I can to help the Panthers have a successful year in 2014," he said.

Agree problem is we need someone now.......

Honestly, I would have liked him.
But I would take Saffy now... immediately.
He's been there done that and never let us down.
Would be much cheaper too.
I know, they are different but we need another prop.

Makes you wonder if we were ever a chance or even made an enquiry. I'll take saffy anyday.
hope we still have hope to get Tariq sims. Heck even take Glen Stewart on a 2 year contract. Could be a good mentor to the junior forwards we have now.

The Sims rumour has gone very quiet they certainly are doing everything in their power to keep him at the club and at least keep him happy the same rumour was going around about Linnet last year to.

Looks like he's playing in slow motion tonight.

Rather Proctor over Sims, has been consistently good over the last few seasons.

Seems to me that we are always looking for a bargain rather than the best player for the job. Widdop and Dugan were very good buys but to miss Fifita and Grant is very disappointing. To me there seems no urgency to address the problems we have with our forward pack. We have some good mobile forwards but lack the essential couple of props that can take them on up the middle.

In Saffy and Sims it would be fingers crossed again hoping all would work out in our favour. There is only so much risk a Club can take and it seems that we take more than our share of risk when it comes to recruitment. Where are our two big props recruited for this season? Playing steadily in the Cutters. Yes a few of our young forwards are about to fire - De Belin, Frizell, Thompson and Stockwell - however, Hunt (coming back form injury) and Creagh (with the added responsibility of Captain), haven't been at their best this year. Ah Mau and Harrison are not the solution. Merrin is by far our best forward and I believe we need a couple more forwards who are in his class.

Reckon Stockwell can be every bit as good as Grant,so I don't think this a missed opportunity.Would still like Ailomai to be given a run, hits up with no fear.

Stockwell can be just as good as Bailey and Ryles where if not better his skill set already early in his career is quality and has no fear same as De Belin.

The top quality props generally don't move to often in the case of Grant who i consider reliable was forced to move on.

Founa-Blake and Harry Stewart are looking good in the NYC and have time on their side Ailomai just needs a shot the same as Groat to see where they actually are in their progression Millward is a very smart coach and they will certainly improve underneath him.

Watch out for Jay Gallagher in the NYC making his debut he's a very good young fella.
