The machine is running out of puff. Back to back premierships are extraordinarily rare. Since 1990 and not counting superleague it has only happened once. The Broncos never did it (again, not counting super league), the Storm never did it even with their star studded team and the magic cap. The grind is brutal. And maintaining the hunger after you have won it when every single team lifts to face the reigning premiers is almost impossible.

That is why it has happened just once in a generation and that is why it is a pretty safe bet to say Penrith probably won't win it this year.

Having Cleary and Luai out for 4-5 weeks just before the finals puts a serious dent in their title aspirations. Lack of match fitness, form and combinations with the rest of the team just when they should be peaking has got to hurt.

Still favourites but are no longer near certainties to win the comp. This development has thrown open the entire premiership rather than it being a boring procession to how teams line up along the path of another Panther premiership.

Wtf you talking about? Broncos went back to back 92/93 and roosters 18/19
