When I worked at a club with the 20s and reggies, it seemed like every 2nd week there was someone from Asda there doing random tests and then more like 2 out of 3 weeks during the season after games.

Is the question, is there drug use or where do the results end up?

HGH is human growth hormone.
It os produced naturally by the body. But can be supplemented artificially. It helps in recovery and reduces the breakdown of muscle, not so much as a mass gainer.

In the body its secretion is regulated by the pituitary gland. An example of excess HGH is in acromegaly. People with this will usually have large hands and feet. Very pronounced jaws, and be tall with large heads. In this case it is caused by a tumour on the pit.

Often prescribed to the elderly with muscle wastage and fatigue.

Most rec drugs with one obvious exception leave the body at worst in a few days. Even quite a lot of PEDs don't hang around.

Side effects include growth in the extremities such as ear lobes, chin, brow. Look at a few running around now with longer hair and/or headgear and wonder...

It's also prescribed to kids with growth problems.

Given the way some players have managed to use rec drugs throughout their career without being caught I would be very surprised if some aren't using PH drugs and getting away with it.

Most professional sports are rife with doping IMO. I am sure Australian sports are no different.

The drugs available to use are always ahead of the tests available to identify them.

While I am sure the ASADA does it's best there are most likely drugs available that there are no tests designed to pick it up. Actually I am positive there is.

if you read that ASADA pdf it says this

The NRL and ASADA have also endorsed the eight-year storage of blood and urine samples that the Authority may wish to retain for the purposes of future investigation.

No BS!!

Great thread.

I think the sheer torture pro-cyclists go through throughout a season, in Grand Tours particulary, and you can kind of understand why it's rife in that sport. Not condoning it, but understand why it's done. There's no doubt most riders were dabbling in something throughout the 80s and 90s. You only had to see how they'd race like maniacs every day for 3 weeks of an event like the TDF. No human can sustain complete balls out efforts on consecutive days like they used to do. In more recent GT's, you notice the truce that's called in the peleton on chosen days where they just allow the breakaway to have the day.

I'm always curious about NRL players being on the gear. You only have to see a few of them out and about and how they just stick out. No doubt the training helps, but a lot of them are absolute monsters in comparison to the average joe. Plus, i'm not sure how diligent players are with their recovery routines. I know they eat a shitload in order to maintain playing weight, and a lot recovery is done at the club after training, etc, but I wonder if they're as diligent away from the club.

It's an athletic discipline like any other where the training, recovery, injury, compete cycle needs to be maintained at an optimum.
