another one but i also dont get it malaga was never gonna be finished in 2027 for launch. thats been known since day 1?

Perth Bears: $13m temporary WACA home because $20m Malaga centre not finished for NR team’s launch in 2027

A $20 million high-performance centre in Malaga promised to the Perth Bears will not be ready in time for the team’s NRL debut in 2027, it can be revealed, triggering the extra $13 million taxpayer spend on a new temporary home at the WACA.
The Cook Government on Sunday announced that $12.9 million would be spent upgrading the WACA’s Lillee Marsh stand and installing goal posts, subsoil drainage and grass for a training field on vacant land across the road in East Perth.
A State Government spokeswoman said the East Perth site was only assessed for rugby league after the $65 million Bears deal was signed in May.
Expressions of interest opened in June for the $20 million Malaga multi-sport precinct that was promised during the State election, but there is no construction timetable for it.
The West Australian understands it is now unlikely to be ready for the start of the NRL season in 2027.
A Government statement on Tuesday suggested the Bears could remain based in East Perth for several years.

“The State Government is working with the Perth Bears on a final timeframe for use of the Lillee Marsh Stand and they will use the Waterbank training field from October,” a Cook Government spokeswoman said.
“We will continue to work with them to secure a permanent home. The standard of these facilities will allow the Perth Bears to train, recover and play at the highest level over the coming years.”
It comes as Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas claimed the growing price tag has sparked dissent in Labor ranks — which was rejected by senior frontbencher John Carey on Tuesday.
Mr Carey, the Housing Minister and Member for Perth, insisted his local community would be the big winner.
“I do support the investment in community infrastructure,” he said.
“The Waterbank precinct has had a troubled history because of the ground or the geo-tech, so getting Waterbank used as a useful site has been very problematic.
“So for the East Perth community, I know there’s a level of excitement about activating the precincts by having the Bears there and having that investment in that infrastructure.”
On Monday, Mr Zempilas demanded the Premier apologise for misleading voters in March when he vowed no taxpayers’ money would go to the NRL.

He also claimed that the cost had divided the Government.
“There is leadership rumbling. We know that because not everybody in the Labor Government is signed up to the racetrack and we know they’re not all signed up to the rugby league team,” Mr Zempilas said.
“There’s a reason why there is murmuring and now louder discussion about future leadership within the Labor Government.”
Mr Carey challenged him to produce proof.
“Basil Zempilas just shoots from the hip, please cite me the examples,” he said.
“I would say it’s the WA Liberals who are conflicted on net zero, as we’re seeing the turmoil in the Federal Liberals.
“So, again, like everything Basil says, he just says things off the cuff.”

For those of us not based in Perth. Is this ground next to the WACA the area they are referring to as “Waterbank” training fields?

The original plan was for Ken Allen field upgrade to include a temp home until malaga was built. This was going to be paid for by the Western Bears Consortium. NRL declining the bid has meant the WA govt has had to put its hands in its pockets to cover it instead.
Good negotiations by PVL then, getting more than the private bid could 👍

In addition, again, for those unfamiliar with Perth, here's the whole area that the Perth Bears would be utilising for that time they're at the WACA.

HBF Park (main home ground) in the north-western corner of this image, Optus Stadium (likely occasional home ground for bigger games) to the east, and the WACA / Waterbank area to the south. All very close to eachother and very convenient.

For comparison, here's the other two proposals and their locations:

Down near Fremantle is the abandoned plan of using the old Fremantle Roosters Ken Allen Field, the above-mentioned WACA / Waterbank / HBF Park / Optus Stadium area in the centre, and up top is the Malaga site.

WA Premier attacked over Perth Bears funding, ‘He has betrayed their trust’

They say sport and politics shouldn’t mix.

But when it comes to the NRL’s 18th franchise, the Perth Bears, it’s a mantra that’s becoming increasingly difficult to achieve following a full-blooded tirade from WA Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas.

Speaking earlier this week, the State Liberal Party leader and former sports broadcaster repeatedly called out the actions of Labor Premier Roger Cook over the continued—and increasing—public investment being made as the Perth Bears prepare for their debut NRL season in 2027.

Just last Sunday, WA Deputy Premier and Minister for Sport and Recreation Rita Saffioti announced an additional $12.9 million would be spent as part of the existing WACA ground redevelopment to create a new professional training field for the Bears, something Zempilas said was a ‘betrayal’ of the State’s voters.

“It was 65 million, then another 20 million, then another 13 million, we’re up at around the 100 million dollar mark,” Zempilas declared of the WA Government’s investment in the Bears.

“The Premier said in his own words that ‘no taxpayer money would go to the NRL’—well the NRL own the Perth Bears and the Western Australian public have not been fooled by that cute use of terminology.

“He (Cook) has betrayed their trust, he said no money was going to be spent and nearly $100 million is going to be spent, and the public know it. The Premier will have to live and die by what he’s had to say.”

In a later social media post, Zempilas qualified his position, explaining he was not against the Bears per se.

“Nobody is arguing against having a Perth-based NRL side,” he wrote.

“But this Premier Cook pet project is a broken promise not to spend taxpayer money to [sic] the NRL.”

Zempilas, 54, is the Member for Churchlands and served as Lord Mayor of Perth from 2020 until earlier in 2025.

He rose to national fame as a sports commentator for the Seven network, most notably calling AFL and the Olympic Games.

That seems to have become the default logo for any Perth Bears story. Hopefully the official one is out soon!
Agreed.

I wonder where this logo has come from. The Bear head is too detailed. Not sure why the media doesn’t recognise that the Western Force logo is included on this logo, especially Perth media.

Ch 9 Perth running with a fake logo. A logo that contains the Western Force logo within it as well.
Agreed.

This logo is AI generated. It was originally uploaded to one of the fan-run social media pages.

That seems to have become the default logo for any Perth Bears story. Hopefully the official one is out soon! I assume they are waiting on landing the main sponsor and announcing both a same time?
Can confirm it’s sorted and locked in. It will be released soon. The board signed off on it Monday 2 weeks ago (same day as the Gage Brewery sponsorship announcement).

You’re not far off the mark with the major sponsor connection, and name player announcements as a matter of fact.
