So half the teams in the nrl are out and it’s all just Sydney and Brisbane teams

and IF souths juniors owned Souths they were rich. Piggins said no to them

you think Crowe and Holmes a court spent a lot of money on Souths ? They didn’t lol

it was mainly membership revenue that did it

South juniors & South's were different organisations. Crowe & Holmes a court gave rabbits a professional setup. Under piggins South's were run like it was the 1960's. Broncos was the model for superleague.
1994 was the comp's most successful year to that point. Look at the table; easts, balmain, wests were an afterthought. Easy to see why people thought inner city clubs were expendable.

Nah those inner city clubs in Sydney are the backbone of the Australian game

and again south’s juniors wanted to take over south’s seniors. Piggins said no

Only reason league is booming again is the mistakes of the super league peace deal are being fixed up

that peace deal has held back the nrl for 30 years and slowly as those clubs that were lost are coming back the game is getting back the fans if lost

Wests & Balmain drew home attendance averages of about 6k in 1994 which was year of record attendance for league. New big city teams like Brisbane, Newcastle & Canberra lead the way. This was genesis for superleague.

No it wasn’t lol

the idea for super league came from the broncos who took the idea to Rupert Murdoch

Broncos were unhappy with arl over following

1. wanted to host gf in Brisbane
2. Xxxx vs powers beer sponsorship

super league was never the idea of news ltd. Super league ended up taking whatever Sydney clubs it could get despite them being amongst the weakest in Sydney (dogs excepted)

Murdoch wanted the pay tv rights which had been given to packer for free

I think the nswrl should've canned wests & Balmain after 1994. Just like Newtown, Glebe, Annandale.. Even if that doesn't happen, if arl never waged war (which was led by pay tv company), superleague would become home to strongest teams in terms of setup: manly, dogs, Parra, roosters (with Gould & Politis), panthers & maybe sharks.

Easts along with Manly, were the first Sydney teams invited to join SL. What Politis was beginning to do with Easts sat within their ethos on how a club should be run.

Nswrl kicked wests out

they took them to court and were readmitted

Canberra were forced to join super league bc easts were about to get Bradley Clyde

Penrith went Bc they knew if there was a rationalisation of Sydney clubs they would never make it over parra

same for the sharks v red v

Broncos were professional setup & wanted to play in league befitting their ambitions. Early 90's being dominated by expansion teams while game boomed showed importance of foundation teams was not that great anymore. Weakest clubs were inner city teams with aging setups & fanbase due to sprawl & gentrification.

Your idea of professional is canibalising the entire brl for one team ? Lmao

the same professional club that intentionally killed off a rival Brisbane club

and made sure no new Brisbane team would be allowed for 20 years
