Perth Bears or bust?!

Without Pay-TV money no new comp could have been formed

Broncos would have been expelled and replaced
By that stage Queensland legalised gaming machines in licenced venues.

Broncos could have worked with the QRL to create a professional stateside competition. It wouldn't have been as big as the NSWRL. A few BRL clubs would have folded. Still would have been better than what we ended up with. We could have kept all Sydney clubs that were viable in the NSWRL and expanded into Central Coast. The winners from each competition could play against each other at the end of the season.

.. that's Phil Gould's conference idea; NSW & Qld finals with super bowl to follow..

Ask any Newcastle fan about their finances between 1988 to 2015 lol

raiders were about to lose their stars in 95 hence the move to super league
Newcastle's finances have always been shithouse. They have a strong and loyal fanbase. Just haven't been able to convert it into money.

Your saying the idea of super league was to grow the game (big clubs etc)

thats bs

News ltd got the pay tv rights cheap and the broncos killed off the crushers and any other Brisbane side until 2015

rugby league got set back 20 years
Packer and Murdoch never gave a f**k about growing the game.

Arthurson and Quayle didn't handle expansion very well.

Illawarra, Canberra and Newcastle would remain in the NSWRL.

For the NSWRL we could have something like this.

Auckland
Balmain Tigers
Canberra Raiders
Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs
Central Coast
Cronulla Sutherland Sharks
Eastern Suburbs Roosters
Illawarra Steelers
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles
Melbourne
Newcastle Knights
North Sydney Bears
Parramatta Eels
Penrith Panthers
South Sydney Rabbitohs
St George Dragons
Western Suburbs Magpies

For the QRL we could have had this.

Brisbane Broncos
Cairns Cyclones
Central Queensland Capras
Eastern Suburbs Tigers
Fortitude Valley Diehards
Gold Coast Vikings
Ipswich Jets
Logan City Scorpions
Northern Suburbs Devils
Pastoral Brothers Leprechauns
Redcliffe Dolphins
Southern Suburbs Magpies
Sunshine Coast Falcons
Toowoomba Clydesdales
Townsville Stingers
Western Suburbs Panthers
Wynnum Manly Seagulls

I left our Mackay Sea Eagles because they didn't last long in the Queensland Cup. Over time we might have seen the following clubs die.

Balmain Tigers
Cairns Cyclones
Cronulla Sutherland Sharks
Fortitude Valley Diehards
Ipswich Jets
Logan City Scorpions
Northern Suburbs Devils
North Sydney Bears
Pastoral Brothers Leprechauns
Penrith Panthers
South Sydney Rabbitohs
St George Dragons
Western Suburbs Magpies
Western Suburbs Panthers

The competitions would have had a much lower salary cap. Rugby union probably wouldn't have gone professional.

This is jusy my speculation.

Your kinda got a point that once the broncos entered the comp things had to change because they were so much bigger than everyone else

your wrong about the like of Newcastle Canberra or cowboys back then being big teams for super league … they were the opposite

Arko said his biggest mistake was not admitting two Brisbane clubs at once but they wanted the broncos to be strong

had they admitted two Brisbane clubs at once then super league would never have happened
Should've approached Wynnum Manly and Redcliffe - imagine the rivalry they'd have in Brisbane by now, and with several other teams in the league...

Would've alienated fans of other BRL teams. Redcliffe represents area now of almost 500k people in Morton bay. They are different.

Nswrl was having trouble with their own small clubs. Linking with others from another comp was never going to happen.

Would any of the Brisbane clubs would’ve been able to financially compete with Sydney though. Pokies meant they couldn’t match the offers Sydney had
