Perth NRL push gaining momentum

NRL boss David Gallop's push for a Perth team to be included in an expanded NRL competition will gather momentum today when he addresses a business lunch in Western Australia.

Gallop last night said he would talk up moves for Perth to return to the competition for the first time since the Western Reds played in Super League.

"They've got a lot going for them," Gallop said. "They've got a booming economy and they get good crowds whenever we play over there.

"The Western Australian Rugby League has a new administration and there has been a good growth in junior numbers.

"They would also offer the game a new timeslot for broadcasting because of the time difference.

"And they have a great stadium already in place."

The NRL has considered an expansion for 2013 when a new television deal will be in place.

The Central Coast Bears are favourites to be the first new team if the competition is expanded, leaving Perth or a second team from Brisbane as the other candidates.

If Perth happened to get the nod it would be their second venture into rugby league's big time.

The Western Reds - with Mark Geyer their marquee signing - played at the WACA ground with moderate success before reasonable crowds, but folded when peace was restored to the game in 1998.

11 years and waiting for a News Limited lackey still pretending to give a sh*t about rugby league. So - the CC Bears NRL licence is dependent on this?

CC Bears fans have been hearing this sh*t from Gallop for a decade.

gallop quoted as saying:

South Sydney hosts the Storm in Perth on Saturday night and Gallop said it was the perfect opportunity for WA to prove they had an adequate rugby league fan base to support a team of their own if the NRL expanded in 2013.

"In about 12 months' time when we've got a clearer picture of our media rights deal going forward we'll certainly be seriously looking at expansion and the bottom line is Perth's got a lot going for it," Gallop said.

"I guess Saturday night is an opportunity for people to vote with their feet and show us that they have got an interest in rugby league.
"Obviously the (NSW) Central Coast has a lot going for it as well.
"We've got a potential bid from Rockhampton but they don't have a ground at the moment.

"We've even got some enthusiastic people up in Port Moresby but if you line them all up at the moment you'd have to say the Central Coast and Perth are the lead contenders.""
