Yeah, I think it's universally understood to be the year they kicked off on the field.
South Sydney / North Sydney, ect : 1908
Manly : 1947
Newcastle, Brisbane : 1988
Western Reds, ect : 1995
Gold Coast Titans : 2007
Perth Bears : 2027
PNG : 2028
Also, in regards to how the Reds' first season was viewed from a 'successful or not' position, from someone who was here in those days, it was definitely viewed as a success. 11 wins, 11 losses. 11th place. By today's standards that's not bad, but the overall success was the off-field stuff. By that measure, the Reds were a big success. Everyone knew who they were, Reds were headlines in the news & sport sections, we had Chris Ryan reporting on the Ch9 news weekly from inside the Reds camp, Reds gear were everywhere. Kids in school were talking about going to the game that weekend or were (badly!) emulating what they saw after a weekend at lunchtimes. Crowds were good ... especially at a, let's face it, bad RL venue. The vibe was positive.
Then the whole SuperLeague thing came and ruined that positive vibe and WA had its 2nd aussie rules club to fawn over and its never been the same since.
But in that first year, 1995, the Reds were successful in a number of ways. And I think, from memory, only finished maybe a win or two from the top 8 at season's end.
