I have tried to explain this to you many times but Gill's dick has fried your brain.

The NRL's next TV deal takes in 4 years of this deal you are comparing too, It seems like more due to being 9 years in advance
And Im talking now. Sure in 2028 we youd hope wed be better off than now, but thats a sht load of wasted time and missed revenue Vlandys signed us up to. In that 5 years AFL will have earnt around $500-600mill more than us just from Tv. Thats not helping close the gap!

That is guesswork, Telstra haven't said their share of that money

Regardless.

They added 4% extra length to their regular season amongst other things to get that, Not just for the 7 years but the previous 2 that was already reduced.

IF NRL did that you would be bagging it, yet it is good in this case?

NRL doesn't aren't able to go to 9 games a round next TV deal, Or Vegas and any of these other things without a long term deal locked in

That in theory should improve the next deal more then IF expansion didn't happen so soon

What? I've been championing a twenty team NRL to bring more content for more tv value forever lol

Its $571mill cash avg a year from '25, its fair to say at least $500mill of that is TV, probably up to $540mill. Its likely Telstra is paying $30-50mill cash at most for what they are getting.

we added a 17th club for, allegedly, $20mill extra revenue and its cost us around $19mill grant plus extra running costs for the comp. ie its added virtually nothing to the NRL's bottom line due to inept negotiations,.
At least they've added content and got a decent uplift with it.

Now whose guessing :)

Of course it is all guess work, You are the one that is adamant the deal is shit yet we don't any figures.

We know AFL is getting $4bn in total but it will go up every year.

So it isn't $500m difference for starters

No we know they are getting $4bill cash over 7 years. Using the accounting 2% increase per year they use for tv deal revenue now, and for an avg of $571mill a year, gives you the start and finish point of actual cash realised in the financial report. Ive already shown you how it plays out annually for 25-31 cash wise in the tv thread. In 2028 theyll realise $571mill cash, 3 years before that it'll be less by 2% a year, 3 years after it it will be more by 2% a year.

NRl will be same. In 2025 they will realise $400mill ish cash and for 2 years before less and 2 years after more.

That isn't how it works though.

Telstra is around $500m of that.

Leaving $3.5b for TV

The TV deal likely ends in 2031 at $600m

Now you do that working backwards and it you see it isn't much in front of NRL, especially with the extra 2% of content a season for 9 seasons

If AFR and Roy Masters is correct and the NRL announced was cash then that makes the NRL very good.

The game has enough to do some vanity projects for the 1st time ever which is all I want from a deal, Those who want to compare once broken down they are comparable - Assuming we have 9 games to sell next deal

That would suggets Telstra is paying $71mil a year cash avg which is very hard to believe. NRLs digital arm was only generating around $20-25mill a year revenue. Why would Telstra be paying 3 times that much plus production costs?

Its likely their Tv part of the deal will be around $540-550mill cash in the last year of their deal in 2031.
If, and its a big if given our history, we can get $550mill cash avg from 2028- then we would match their $550mill in 2031, or there abouts. Sadly between now and then they're are earning $500mill cash or so more than us.

Afl cash tv deal 500 to 520 million
Nrl will get 550 million cash

Of the $4bn cash
$500m Telsra

Leaves $3.5bn for TV that is total.
So you take out 15% to cover the 7 years of indexation.

That is $525m gone.

Leaves you with $2.9b

When you divide that by 7 gives you $425m .... that is the true yearly value.

Hence why I say when people break it down NRL isn't too far behind

Inflation killed that afl deal

they would’ve expected the historical 3 percent not 8 percent

The reality of the revenue gap pre and post Vlandys

Pre Vlandys
2017 -$352.6mill (AFL new tv deal)
2018 -$255mill (NRL new tv deal)
2019 -$238mill

Post Vlandys as chair
2020 -$255.2mill
2021 -$163.1mill (covid)
2022 -$276.9mill

2023 will see NRL new tv deal kick in and AFL 2 year extension tv deal kick in, and NRL new investment revenue, included, so will be interesting to see what changes there were last year in the gap.

Depends if pistol Pete is negotiating or not.

haha that is such a spin way of looking at it. If your taking that approach youd need to indexation discount the NRl deal as well over the 5 year duration.

Again you think Telstra is paying $71million cash a year? Why? For what?

They are avg'ing somewhere around $520-530mil cash from tv for 7 years. Add in the $473mill for 23 &24 and the stark reality is from 23-27 they are bringing in $500mill ish cash more than us. Lets hope the NRLs turbo charging of expansion gives us a 20 team comp, or at least annonced, to sell for '28>, that Vlandys doesnt lead the negotiations and that there are 3 rival bidders. then we may finally catch up.

Its an interesting strategy and one that will either pay off or wont. Locking into 9 years of a higher tv deal whilst we are locked into 5 years of substantially less may pay off for us in long run IF there is massive competition for rights come 2028, or for some other reason sports rights become more valuable.
It could just as easily go the other way of course with a downturn in sports rights for numerous reasons. Its a gamble and one we wont know either way for a few years yet.
