Afl has a turnover over a billion dollars vs nrl at 640 million

the least we can get is a bigger tv deal than them

if that happened then yeh it’s on par with 95

in 95 afl was a joke in nsw and qld

a pimple on the sporting backside of those two great states

AFL turnover includes 85m Government Grant for Marvel reno and Marvel stadium revenue of 80m.

AFL competition revenue is around the 770m mark.
NRL competition revenue in 2023 will be over 640m.

AFL revenue would have been more than double the ARL in 1995.

Good talk. hahaha

And their next tv deal starts soon

when we do our next deal we need to beat them it’s that simple

if course the afl are going to include marvel turnover like the nrl includes turnover from the gambaro

Good luck to them for having a billion in assets that should be our next goal when we currently have property assets worth 50 million

The AFL also have 450m in liabilities.

Its not an achievement to borrow money to lift your revenue.

Everybody is doing that these days.

NRL have a net position of 200m to buy up assets.

In due time they will when they find assets worth investing in.

So yes i believe the NRL is healthier than in 95.

Convince me otherwise....

Gap between us and afl didn’t exist in 95
More clubs in 95

until rugby league reclaims the top spot it’s not as strong as 95

vlandys will get there though

In 95 rugby league was bulletproof and its been a 30 year slog since then under dud leaders who have held the game back

nrl today isn’t even close to its potential

Australia`s population 1995: 18m 2023: 26.5m. Increase ~50%.
Crowds 1995: 13.9k 2023: 19k. Increase ~36%.
Would appear that crowds were probably better on a per capita basis in 1995.

It would appear, yes.

A look at other metrics.

ARL 1995 aggregate viewers lucky to be 50m aggregate a year
NRL 2023 aggregate viewers per season is tracking for over 140m.
More than 100% more eye balls on the game.

ARL tv deal 1995 10m a year
AFL tv deal 1995 17m a year
AFL broadcasting 70% larger than the ARL in 1995

NRL 2023 broadcasting deal cash 400m+
AFL 2023 broadcasting deal cash 383m.
50m Telstra is for Comms at Marvel.
Its neck and neck in 2023.

The NRL has never been in better shape.

AFL revenue last year was 944m...and before Docklands development grants was 873m.
NRL revenue last year was 593m.

Your tv deal wasnt as good as the AFLs in 1995 either.
A big part of the prblem for both codes was the KOG agreements - Nine wouldnt tread on Sevens turf (AFL), and Seven wouldnt tread on Nines turf (ARL). THis was alluded to in court proceedings, and in a number of books by parties involved down the track.

AFL revenue more than double ARL revenue in 1995.

Thank you very much.

How someone can argue the game was in a better position in 95 i will never know.

Look there was a time when the NSWRL did get a higher broadcast revenue - briefly - Tens deal before they went broke, but even then they wouldnt have had the AFLs revenues

Look at that after the Super league War.

1998 - 2005. Average gap in revenue during this period is 92m a year or close to 150% higher than the NRL.

AFL total revenue 1998-2005 1.144b
ARL total revenue 1998-2005 499m

Today

A like for like comparison.

AFL 800m no Marvel stadium. (440m+ in liabilities)
NRL 563m no Gambaru Hotel (98m in liabilities)

AFL revenue 27% larger today as opposed to the period 1995-2005 of close to 150% larger than the ARL.

From 1995-2012 the NRL where poor relative to where the game is today.

If you take out Marvel, you need to take out the loans assoicated with it from the liabilities.

It should be noted that most of the liabilites arent connected to Marvel - interest bearing loans and borrowings are only 77m - that will probably be gone this year (they paid 90m off last year)

127m - deferred income is Grants for the development
170m - Lots of outstanding Trade payables

The NRL currently has 201m in equity (including 182m in cash)
The AFL currently has 314m in equity (including 178m in cash and 78m in restricted cash (gov dev grants)

This did not occur to me, Good point.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

The ARL of 1995 has got nothing on the NRL of 2023.

Rupert Murdoch was from Adelaide

pretty sure he went to a toff school in Melbourne

so he grew up a fumbler

chose rugby league to drive his new pay tv network not the football code he grew up with.

decision paid off in spades. Rugby league the dominant sport on pay tv. Even without afl rights foxtel became dominant worth 5 billion

Sydney swans and Brisbane lions were basically broke multiple times in this time

afl almost pulled the plug on the swans until super league came along

Nrl equity built up so fast afl has had 30 years o financial stability to do it

concerning so much afl equity is from government grants whilst the nrl was generated from its own activity

pretty sure he went to a toff school in Melbourne

so he grew up a fumbler

Born in Melbourne, went to Geelong Grammar.

chose rugby league to drive his new pay tv network not the football code he grew up with.

He definitely tried with the AFL according to John Elliot, but no one was buying - Elliot was the brains behind the only real attempt to start an AFL type superleague and even he thought it better to work with the league if it was possible , and after Macedon in 1985, the clubs and the league were all in together.

Because the AFL locked away the clubs in perennial license agreements from 1986, as opposed to the NSWRL which had yearly - and the NRL STILL has periodic agreements with the clubs - and the AFL itself owned the club IPs, licensing them back to the clubs - there simply wasnt the scope for the clubs to form another league either.

This distinction is described in detail in the book "The Commission we had to have".

decision paid off in spades. Rugby league the dominant sport on pay tv. Even without afl rights foxtel became dominant worth 5 billion

They've had AFL rights since 2002. He didnt have a choice before that as the rights had been tied up with Seven since 1998 for C7, which Foxtel ended up carrying until 2002 anyway.

Sydney swans and Brisbane lions were basically broke multiple times in this time

For both clubs this was pre Superleague - pre 1993 when both clubs were under private ownership

afl almost pulled the plug on the swans until super league came along

This happened in 1992.
