AFL competition revenue is around the 770m mark.
NRL competition revenue in 2023 will be over 640m.

In 95 rugby league was bulletproof and its been a 30 year slog since then under dud leaders who have held the game back

Crowds 1995: 13.9k 2023: 19k. Increase ~36%.
Would appear that crowds were probably better on a per capita basis in 1995.

ARL 1995 aggregate viewers lucky to be 50m aggregate a year
NRL 2023 aggregate viewers per season is tracking for over 140m.
More than 100% more eye balls on the game.

AFL broadcasting 70% larger than the ARL in 1995

NRL 2023 broadcasting deal cash 400m+
AFL 2023 broadcasting deal cash 383m.
50m Telstra is for Comms at Marvel.
Its neck and neck in 2023.

Your tv deal wasnt as good as the AFLs in 1995 either.

• 1993 – Ch7 pays $17 million a year for 1993 – 1998 (100 million)
• 1993. Nine signs a 7 year, 10 million p.a deal for the NSWRL including Friday nights, Sunday afternoons, Challenge Cup, Commonwealth Bank Cup and all representative matches. This includes Pay TV rights. The ABC would continue to show Match of the Day on Saturday, but at a reduced rate from the 1992.

A big part of the prblem for both codes was the KOG agreements - Nine wouldnt tread on Sevens turf (AFL), and Seven wouldnt tread on Nines turf (ARL). THis was alluded to in court proceedings, and in a number of books by parties involved down the track.

Look there was a time when the NSWRL did get a higher broadcast revenue - briefly - Tens deal before they went broke, but even then they wouldnt have had the AFLs revenues

1998 - 2005. Average gap in revenue during this period is 92m a year or close to 150% higher than the NRL.

decision paid off in spades. Rugby league the dominant sport on pay tv. Even without afl rights foxtel became dominant worth 5 billion

Sydney swans and Brisbane lions were basically broke multiple times in this time

afl almost pulled the plug on the swans until super league came along

Nrl equity built up so fast afl has had 30 years o financial stability to do it

concerning so much afl equity is from government grants whilst the nrl was generated from its own activity

Born in Melbourne, went to Geelong Grammar.

chose rugby league to drive his new pay tv network not the football code he grew up with.

He definitely tried with the AFL according to John Elliot, but no one was buying - Elliot was the brains behind the only real attempt to start an AFL type superleague and even he thought it better to work with the league if it was possible , and after Macedon in 1985, the clubs and the league were all in together.

Because the AFL locked away the clubs in perennial license agreements from 1986, as opposed to the NSWRL which had yearly - and the NRL STILL has periodic agreements with the clubs - and the AFL itself owned the club IPs, licensing them back to the clubs - there simply wasnt the scope for the clubs to form another league either.

This distinction is described in detail in the book "The Commission we had to have".

They've had AFL rights since 2002. He didnt have a choice before that as the rights had been tied up with Seven since 1998 for C7, which Foxtel ended up carrying until 2002 anyway.
