If anything full-time squad sizes should be increasing.
Teams are using more players than ever - in 2017 the average number of players used per club was 28. In 2024 it was 31.

With a 25 man squad, it only takes 3 injuries/suspensions and you're sending paperwork into HQ every Tuesday.
Maybe a 25 man first team squad (this is where the RLPA min wage comes into play $135k) and back to proper reserve grade with a further 15 players on a lower min wage (say $80k)? so a 40 man squad cross 1st grade and reserve grade. Reserve grade can always be topped up with U19's (or an U21's if we move to a national Toyota cup grade again) on development money.

Agree should go to 36 plus 6 rather than 30 plus 6

Clubs these days have 8 to 10 on the sidelines every week

Fantastic news. What a great comp it will be with Perth in and the return,of sorts, of the mighty Bears.

Hopefully the Bears can win their first premiership since 1922 within their first 5 years of returning to the big league.

"is Vlandys pressuring media? Well I'm the lead league reporter for nine and the herald and he's never pressured me. But it's possible. Just asking questions"

Weedler is a scum muck racker
I always cringe when journalists refer to their paper as”this masthead”. Just trying to make themselves sound intelligent. And who buys newspapers these days or pays to read them online ? My Grandmother used to buy the SMH only because it was the perfect size for lining her budgie’s cage. SMH a masthead? More like a single man rubber dinghy taking on water at an alarming rate .

The bit about the cash cow being on sunrise was peak PVL
I missed that comment.

I found his answer when asked about the local media;

"I think the media coverage has been a bit biased, in the sense that the main newspaper here is owned by Seven West Media, that has the AFL rights, let's be quite frank," he told reporters on Thursday at Perth's HBF Park, set to be the home ground of the Bears.

"They don't want us to be here, because they realise we're going to be competitive and we're going to take some of the lunch, and we eat a lot so we'll be taking a fair bit of their lunch."

While I'm buzzing about Perth getting a team again, I just had a thought that for some reason interested me. In 2028, for the first time ever, an NRL game will comprise of two teams not from Australia when PNG play NZ Warriors.

This is only a couple of decades (but seemingly not that long ago to me!) after the first ever non-NSW Grand Final (Brisbane vs Melbourne) took place, and the first all-Qld Grand Final (Brisbane vs Nth.Qld).

How times are changing from when I was a kid compared to now as a 44yr old!

Huge day for the sport, first expansion outside of NSW/QLD since the Storm, Bears back in the big leagues, Perth finally has its own team again even if it’s 10-15 years overdue.

Well done to V’Landys, Abdo, Cook & all others involved.

The expansion forum will now just be a dick measuring contest between Christchurch and Ipswich for the next 5 years, with the odd mention of Adelaide & Singapore of course.
