I think it is a bit too dismissive to say they only grew as a result of the SL war. That was most likely the main thing but the AFL also got smart a lot sooner than RL and worked out how to take advantage of that opportunity. Eg targeting a niche fan base as well as the overall fan base.
They really seem to do well in Sydney with the white elites - I suspect its the same in Brisbane. Part of the reason they get good crowds compared to the actual overall interest is their fans have a good amount of money that they probably inherited and so can afford to go.
The AFL has pretty much taken rugby union's base.

Nope. The NRL only bought touch footy about 2-3 years ago if I remember correctly.

Prior to then they were'n't owned by the NRL, so they would not have been able to use "NRL" as I dare say it would be trade marked.

They dont own it now, but they have a very close alignment and provide funding to it which grants them a board seat or two. They dont control it though, the alignment allows them to call it NRL Touch Football, and the NRL gets to have its own NRL Touch.

I remember when we had one season of televised NRL Touch Footy. Some / all NRL clubs were represented, but the logos and jerseys were not of the NRL clubs, nor the players. Just the colours and names. Only lasted one season, if I remember correctly.

Yeah. I think maybe they had a couple of seasons. It probably ended with Covid.
If they brought that back, televised on Fox as a February competition and had some NRL (like Katoa, Iongi, Gutherson, Moses reportedly good touch players) and WNRL players in sides alongside the best actual touch footy players it would be huge for the game.

I stand corrected. My mistake :)

NRL & NRLW players may struggle to keep up with top flight touch players, the speed of the game...
