Diego after 8 years of hearing the same hot air about expansion and prospects of a Perth team you must forgive me if I see a little cynical when it comes to such talk. You are also quoting things Smith has not said. There was nothing definitive in his statement re 18 teams within ten years, ten Fkng years!?, and he mentioned Perth in same breath as NZ which suggests there is no decision on where has has been made. In fact given the nrl's neglect of WA, and even white anting of the warl, since Smith took over I have my doubts they have any serious interest in Perth.

Afl expanded then said to tv right we have nine games it is going to cost you more, we on the other hand continue to sit and wait and hope tv companies will dictate expansion.

I can't believe the NRL isn't rushing expansion and adding a team in Perth after they averaged a huge 9k viewers this year, they even sold out a game in Perth! If that's not an indication they could support an NRL club at a time when the NRL owns two clubs and has a financial stake in two others, all in rugby league heartland, I don't know what is!

I can't believe they are rushing to spend millions of $'s on clubs who draw less than 10kmpeople to watch them, in tne games heartland. See how silly straw man arguments with selective statistics can be?

Yeh lets just expand to areas where NRL is already popular...we can have 9 QLD teams as well!! :sarcasm:

I can remember heaps of media "experts" saying that Melbourne would never be successful. Yes the junior development in Victoria is highly subsidised but it is growing.

AFL's recent expansion hasn't been a success.
Afl has introduced 4 clubs since 95. 2 have been black holes for the afl. 2 have been successful.
In that same time the nrl have had 8 expansion clubs.
4 went by the wayside due to the super league ( reds. Crushers, rams, mariners)
3 have been successful by nrl standards ( storm, warriors, Cowboys)
1 requires propping up, but nowhere near at the same level as its afl equivalent ( gold Coast).

the reds, rams and crushers should never have been kicked out. the fact that we still don't have teams in perth and adelaide, and a 2nd team in brissy is ridiculous

I can't believe a buzz rothfield opinion piece has caused so much controversy. The bloke is an abolished muppet with an anti rugby league agenda, stop giving him the publicity.

Agreed, the article itself complete nonsense, and not worth discussing.

Issues around expansion of the comp are valid and worth discussing, but possibly in another thread.

The game is crying out for some decent journos.....

AFL has 10 teams in the Melbourne region.

If we wanted to cull the amount of teams, the time to do it was the late 90's.

Teams have rusted on supporters that wont budge. Itll only anger the league community.

Bring on the new expansion teams.

Which is the point, if we are spending millions keeping established clubs in rugby league heartland a float its probably not the time to be spending tens of millions keeping a new club in Perth viable where there's at very best a niche following. It doesn't take a genius to appreciate that adding new teams while the governing body already owns 2.5 clubs probably isn't real smart and only adds to the burden. Just because the game has the money to waste doesn't mean they should waste it.

Expansion will come when the current clubs are more healthy, not prefect, but better than they are currently.

We should just merge all the western sydney teams into one.

You know: a "Greater Western Sydney" team...
