Phil Rothfield- Nine Sydney teams is too many

I think it would be folly just to give up on the inner west. Is there enough Rugby League fans around here to support a club outright....probably not but its still an important enough area with a fair bit of cash.

There are pros and cons about the amount of sydney sides. It sucks for fans of non sydney teams because its like a big vacuum cleaner sucking up all the talent. A 20 year old male bringing in the big bucks will want to be where the action is and that is Sydney. It means the regional sides struggle to get talent because if a player can't get a gig at Sydney club A he will just move to Sydney club B or C or D or E. Players can live in the Eastern Suburbs and play for any sydney side if they wanted to. It also means if a player is deciding between two teams a sydney side and a non sydney side they might take slightly less to stay in sydney because they won't have to move.

On the otherhand sydney is a massive city that sprawls like a sonofabitch. Each side (well mostly) covers a unique geographical area....well besides the Roosters who have an area the size of a stamp but they are very successful.

I can't believe they are rushing to spend millions of $'s on clubs who draw less than 10kmpeople to watch them, in tne games heartland. See how silly straw man arguments with selective statistics can be?

Yes how dare the game look after it's current fan bases and stakeholders before venturing into a new market.

How can anyone contemplate dumping / moving the Tigers, they cover a massive area in the west & the supporter base will continue to grow.

Secondly, it is a "joint venture" between Western Suburbs Magpies & Balmain Tigers - 1 Sydney club has effectively been cut for this team to exist - they've done their part.

Forming the joint venture didn't guarantee their survival for ever. Where are all these supposed 100,000 + fans??? They can't even get 10,000 members, and this is 2 foundation clubs joined together. Split the joint venture up, and if they can survive on their own, cool. If they are unable to survive on their own, and end up folding, so be it!

Yeh lets just expand to areas where NRL is already popular...we can have 9 QLD teams as well!! :sarcasm:

As I said in another thread let Nth Qld replace the Blackhawks and Broncos revert to being Wests in the QLD Cup

Then the rest of NRL can revert to playing for FG in the NSW Cup

All problems solved

So you hold the same opinion if it was the 80s? May as well just kill off the magpies now.
How about in the 90s when souffs were axed?
Not that you'd care.

Yep. The Magpies relocated to Campbelltown to survive, and if they were still in first grade and had to relocate again to survive, I would support it. It's better than being a part of an abomination! :)

Why would you support it? You've abandoned them and become a souffser.

Or is this just a phase?

Annandale and Cumberland as well. No need for the magpies or souffs though...

Ha! Balmange can't even afford a Sydney Shield team, let alone a first grade team! :)

I've abandoned the abomination of a joint venture, not the Magpies. I would still support Souths, but I would support the Magpies too.

So you've abandoned the team the magpies are a part of yet you still support the magpies?

Can I send you half a Tigers membership?

Since you can support multiple teams, you may as well support them all.

108 premierships! Unsurpassed since 1908!

Which is the point, if we are spending millions keeping established clubs in rugby league heartland a float its probably not the time to be spending tens of millions keeping a new club in Perth viable where there's at very best a niche following. It doesn't take a genius to appreciate that adding new teams while the governing body already owns 2.5 clubs probably isn't real smart and only adds to the burden. Just because the game has the money to waste doesn't mean they should waste it.

Expansion will come when the current clubs are more healthy, not prefect, but better than they are currently.

Maybe they cant be sustainable? lets face it Souths won the jackpot, what are the odds of a club finding an A list Hollywood star to bring the glamour with a multi millionaire businessman mate to bring the money and business sense? If Rusty hadn't come along do you think the readmitted souths would be in the position they are in now or the position Cronulla, Wests, Penrith, Sts etc etc have or are in now financially?

I believe the NRL has more than enough revenue to do both, short term prop up struggling clubs, increase the club grants to see if that will help clubs sustainability AND invest in growth and expansion.
BUT at some point you have to question if the clubs can be sustainable and just because they have been around a long time and are in a supposed RL region doesn't mean they are guaranteed to be successful or sustainable. IF the over saturation in Sydney is correct then we wont see things improve just by throwing a couple more million $'s a year grant at every club. It might be the NRL needs to decide which clubs are worth saving and which should be let go for the greater good. Hopefully wont come to that but stopping growth whilst they figure that out for a few years is just very myopic imo.

Ffs, you're an annoying shit.

I follow the Magpies in the lower grades. I haven't supported the abomination of a joint venture since 2011. Get over it.
