Philip Anselmo: 'I Would Have Taken A Bullet For Dimebag'

Couldn't agree more here mate, it was actaully the first time I remember being p*ssed off at a concert was when Phil layed down on stage while performing.

I was so pumped to see them the first time they were out and played the Ent Centre in Sydney and was disappointed in Phil but felt better at seeing some stuff from the States where he was just as lacklustre as he was that night so I felt better. But his last performance at the Horden was just rubbish and if it wasn't for Dime and C.O.C. the night would have been a bust.

I also think it's a fair statement to make about Dime being one of the great guitarists and comparing him to EVH and Steve Vai etc, he influenced thousands, had an unmistakable style and was extremely skilled, it's worth noting that he was banned from entering guitar comps in his area by the time he was 16 because he too good.

I always liked Pantera since I first head CFH and if nothing more will always be thankful for thier help in getting rid of that awful grunge phase Metal went through.

If the story with his back problems are true - perhaps this was the reason why he needed to lie down on stage, Im not sure. No one ever knows with Phil. His standard of singing and performing definately declined after the Great southern Trendkill tour. Perhaps this was due to his back pain or other reasons unkown. He did also have throat cancer in 97/98.

It could be his back, or he was blind drunk, or him needing a hit, whatever it was it sucked and not what we paid our hard earnt to go and watch. I saw Pantera at every oppurtunity I could while they were touring Oz and not once did I see this wild, awesome frontman he makes himself out to be. I saw a guy who seemed to only "put in" for half a show.

I loved to hear Phil on CD and feel as though he was the perfect vocals for Pantera but for me seeing Pantera live was always Dime's show simply because I never saw anything more than a half-arsed Phil while Dime always seemed to be going off.

I have heard so many bad raps about Phil's performance on the 2001 tour of Australia, but when I saw them play Festival Hall in Brisbane on that tour they owned that joint. After seeing the Vulgar Video's I realise that he used to be so much more animated on stage, but Id still give anything to be at that festival hall gig again.

Then again, I always hear how he was sh*t in Melbourne and Sydney, maybe he was particularly bad down there and had a better show up here? Who knows.

Oh and for anyone to compare Eddie Van Halen to Dimebag...please, leave your old school sh*t out of this. Someone is probably going to come in about Ratt at this point of the conversation I assume, speaking of old school sh*t.

I know what you mean. Apparently he fell over on stage in Melbourne. Perhaps as a result of him being blind drunk or his back medication who knows.

The show I saw in the states was the most amazing show ive ever seen. Phil was like he was on the home videos. He put in an awesome performance for over 2 1/2 hours. His voice sounded amazing. It was the best show I have ever seen and I have been to many many metal concerts. Vinnie Paul is the best drummer I have heard live. I have heard dave lombardo, Danny Carey and some other great drummers, but to me vinnie was more precise and clever than any of these.

I guess Phils body was only going to take so much with all the abuse it received over the years. Pantera in their prime 1990 - 1996 were the best Metal band of our time IMO

Ok now you've lost me. Better than Danny Carey? Not in 100 million years could he ever get even close to Danny Carey. Vinnie may be the perfect man for Pantera but he's got NOTHING on Carey or a host of other drummers.

100% Agree on Carey, awesome drummer.

The 1990-96 assestment on Pantera is spot on, they were the dominant force in Metal at that stage but the "Greatest" tag will always come down to personal choice. As far as I'm concerned no 1 band can lay claim to being the "Greatest".........except Sabbath.

I don't think you've listened close enough to Vinnie. I studied the drumming of both very closely. Danny is an amazing drummer. But some of the drumming Vinnie comes up with is just as amazing. In the talent department they are both probably equal. I just think Vinnnie is a more clever drummer and knows exactly what the song requires. Vinnie also has a beter drum sound IMO. I guess it comes down to taste again.

I don't think they were ever the dominant force either, but they were reasonably influential around that time.

Maybe I find the fact that they're on the lighter side of the metal spectrum a reason to refute your claim or perhaps it's because I still believe there were many others more dominant in metal circles.

Hell no
Judas Fn Priest!

When I say greatest ever I guess what I mean is greates of my time or greatest I ever saw. Should have clarified that. Maiden Sabbath and Judas Preist are all brilliant bands thatI never had the chance to see live unfortunatley. Hopefully Maiden will tour here again.

I don't understand your lighter and heavier sides of metal. I still think that Black Sabbath are the heaviest band of all time. Just because they didn't have extreme gain on the guitars and lightening double kick rythyms on the drums doesn't make a band less or more heavy IMO.
To me heaviness is measured by the song structure nad a sense of evil

I remember when ardent Guns'n'Roses fans used to tell me how good Steven Adler was too. I couldn't help but laugh at that one - Adler was useless.

Can't argue there. I guess he did the job but woon't go down as a great drummer

Yeah there are two ways of looking at it. Heavy as in 'dark' refers to Sabbath etc and I absolutely agree with you. There's also heavy in regards to how 'extreme' which is what I was referring to.

fair enough. During the ealry - mid 90's Panter were extremely dominant. Mouth for War went to number 1 on the US charts!! no other metal band in history has ever done this. Their crowd numbers and support was like no other true metal band at the time ( I excluded metallica because they were no longer metal at the time)

Im pretty sure Far Beyond Driven went to #1 as well, thats not a bad effort at all considering there is nothing on that album that is even remotely comparable to the typical songs you'd hear on the top 20 charts.
