I was so pumped to see them the first time they were out and played the Ent Centre in Sydney and was disappointed in Phil but felt better at seeing some stuff from the States where he was just as lacklustre as he was that night so I felt better. But his last performance at the Horden was just rubbish and if it wasn't for Dime and C.O.C. the night would have been a bust.
I also think it's a fair statement to make about Dime being one of the great guitarists and comparing him to EVH and Steve Vai etc, he influenced thousands, had an unmistakable style and was extremely skilled, it's worth noting that he was banned from entering guitar comps in his area by the time he was 16 because he too good.
I always liked Pantera since I first head CFH and if nothing more will always be thankful for thier help in getting rid of that awful grunge phase Metal went through.

His standard of singing and performing definately declined after the Great southern Trendkill tour. Perhaps this was due to his back pain or other reasons unkown. He did also have throat cancer in 97/98.
Darth Bobo said:It could be his back, or he was blind drunk, or him needing a hit, whatever it was it sucked and not what we paid our hard earnt to go and watch. I saw Pantera at every oppurtunity I could while they were touring Oz and not once did I see this wild, awesome frontman he makes himself out to be. I saw a guy who seemed to only "put in" for half a show.
I loved to hear Phil on CD and feel as though he was the perfect vocals for Pantera but for me seeing Pantera live was always Dime's show simply because I never saw anything more than a half-arsed Phil while Dime always seemed to be going off.
waltzing Meninga said:I guess Phils body was only going to take so much with all the abuse it received over the years. Pantera in their prime 1990 - 1996 were the best Metal band of our time IMO
waltzing Meninga said:Vinnie Paul is the best drummer I have heard live. I have heard dave lombardo, Danny Carey and some other great drummers, but to me vinnie was more precise and clever than any of these.
HevyDevy said:Ok now you've lost me. Better than Danny Carey? Not in 100 million years could he ever get even close to Danny Carey. Vinnie may be the perfect man for Pantera but he's got NOTHING on Carey or a host of other drummers.

Hell no
Judas Fn Priest!
HevyDevy said:I don't think they were ever the dominant force either, but they were reasonably influential around that time.
Maybe I find the fact that they're on the lighter side of the metal spectrum a reason to refute your claim or perhaps it's because I still believe there were many others more dominant in metal circles.
waltzing Meninga said:I don't think you've listened close enough to Vinnie. I studied the drumming of both very closely. Danny is an amazing drummer. But some of the drumming Vinnie comes up with is just as amazing. In the talent department they are both probably equal. I just think Vinnnie is a more clever drummer and knows exactly what the song requires. Vinnie also has a beter drum sound IMO. I guess it comes down to taste again.

waltzing Meninga said:I don't understand your lighter and heavier sides of metal. I still think that Black Sabbath are the heaviest band of all time. Just because they didn't have extreme gain on the guitars and lightening double kick rythyms on the drums doesn't make a band less or more heavy IMO.
To me heaviness is measured by the song structure nad a sense of evil
