Absolutely devastating. Not ashamed to say I am shedding a few tears for him right now, despite not knowing him it is really gutting me (similar feeling as when Mckinnon was on life support).

Feeling for Abbott too. Wouldn't blame the poor bloke if he gave up the sport entirely to be honest. He must feel horrible.

Truly sad day for Australian sport

RIP Phil Hughes.

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

He died in the middle doing what he loved and the score sheet will reflect that he was "not out" forever.

Whoever that Fox Sports reporter was that said Hughes was still in contention for the 1st test must be feeling like crap now.

RIP Hughesy. A young talent gone too soon. I didn't realise his 26th birthday was going to be on Sunday.

This is just....I don't know. It's surreal. I didn't know the guy, never met him that I know of, but I couldn't stand up when I saw the news. Just...wow. It's horrible.

I was watching what has now turned out to be one of the most tragic events in Aussie sporting history. The stream wasn't very smooth and I thought it was no big deal. I didn't see the collapse itself properly and I thought it was all precautionary. Even when they put him on the medicab I, possibly naively, thought he was going to give a wave as they took him off like you see in so many footy games. So I was looking at his hand and I realized Dave Warner was trying to keep it up so it wouldn't fall down to the side. That's when I first thought this was bad.

I followed his career passionately because I went to school with people who knew him. He was playing seniors from age 12. I know one person who met him in a game. He said the star of every other team was almost always a wanker. Hughes was the star of his team and also the friendliest person on the team. It seems like he was universally liked. You wouldn't wish this on your worst enemy but especially not on someone who was such a genuinely good person.

RIP Phil.

Yes. Can't forgot Abbott in this, I can't even imagine what he'd be feeling right now.
Chin up Sean, it was a freak accident.

RIP Hughesy!

What a tragedy, absolutely blank feeling.

Thoughts go out to Abbott as well and hope he gets all the help that he will need to get over such a tragic accident.

Agreed, poor Sean. Hope he is getting all the help he needs, and he can come back from this. It was just a tragic accident.

Does anyone know if there's some way to donate to his family....or Sean Abbott...or both, or some sort of fund of any kind? I mean, I know it's nothing more than a token gesture in the end, but if I could get my club to organise something for the coming matches I know a lot of the guys would be behind it. Even if we didn't know the guy, he was a fellow cricketer and cricket tragic...

Cricinfo page has been updated with his death. Surreal seeing that next to a young, current international player.

All the best to his friends and family. While I am sure Abbott will never get over this hopefully he can learn to live with it and get back on the pitch.

An incredibly sad story. The guy is playing a sport he loves and now two days later he is gone.

Really sad for Phil, his family and for young Abbott also.

May Phil rest in peace.
