I dont think anyone should feel bad for criticising him. Hughes was an amazingly talented cricketer and a committed professional. He would have agreed that his efforts against Martin and in India were sub-par.

This was a tragedy. Don't feel bad about what was said in the past - you were only being honest when you said it.

The next day and I'm still shattered...

Yep... I feel numb.

Once again we're reminded just how f**ken fickle life really is. I hope the boys can rally for the first test next week. You know that's exactly what Hughes would have wanted and getting that first day out of the way will go a long way to helping everybody to start the healing process.

I can't see how they can do it though. How can you concentrate or enjoy yourself?

Not a great article. Speculative, and not quoting sources near to Abbott. The headline gave me a fright and stirred up a bizarre feeling for me- the desire for an Australian quick to go on and play a lot of Tests for Australia and take a lot of wickets.

I was one of Hughes' biggest fans. I've always defended him against criticism, and believe he should have been firmly entrenched in the Australian top-order; not playing this game for SA. Like another much-maligned player I have absolutely no doubt he would have had a Johnson-like revivial, and it's a terrible shame we will never know just how great he could have been. RIP

He would have played that game any way - just like Warner and Haddin were.

It is a terrible tragedy and I don't know how they play a test 2 days after his funeral. I can't see Brisbane happening.

Also, I feel like Michael Clarke has been a champion in this.
Yep from all reports he has been immense for Phil's family and Abbott.

Woke up this morning and still feel terribly saddened by loss of a gusty little fighter, i'm not sure how those boys out on the field on Tuesday pick themselves up for a test match. I think they should postpone it, after what has happened this week it has shown us all it is just a game of cricket at the end of the day.

I'm still numb this morning.

Just awful. Read something last night that I thought was poignant "Cricket has indeed lost it's innocence".

While I may get over it in time every time I see a bouncer bowled for a while I will be cringing instead of cheering intimidation of the opposition. That may be stupid....but it was a thought I was having yesterday and it may not come to fruition...but right now I couldn't care less about a cricket game to be played.

I never knew him, met him just once, but he was magnificent.

I do hope Sean Abbott is getting all the help he needs but I too am unsure how he returns to the pitch. How will he react if his captain asks him to bowl a bouncer now? That will be so tough for him. I'm so thankful that Hughes' sister and Clarke spent significant time with him comforting him. That would have meant the world. If he does return...he is a much, much, much stronger person than 90% of people....it would take an uncommon level of Mental strength.

Clarke has shown through this that he is made of the good stuff. He was humble and a pillar of strength for the Hughes family. Incidents such as this show the true character of a person....we've seen Clarke's.

As for Hughes....63 not out and forever at the crease...immortalized in a number that went to show the massive future he had in the game.

Media outlets now going to Macksville to ask them dumb questions.

I'm from a very small community (much smaller than Macksville). When one of the locals passes away, we are all in mourning as we are all family. Please media, leave Macksville alone for a while & let them grieve in private.

Absolutely disgusted by the pics of a very distraught Hughes family leaving the hospital. Clarke and others have asked for people to respect their privacy yet these vultures feel it necessary to take photos of them at their most vulnerable.

Unfortunately they wont. Because they are heartless pricks.

Even that BBC article had a photo of Phillip's parents coming out of the hospital. I mean FMD let them grieve without a camera in their face!

The NSW Premiers department has directed all NSW State Government buildings fly their flags at half-mast today as a sign of respect for the passing of Phillip J Hughes.

Following the tragic passing of cricketer Phillip Hughes on Thursday 27 November, as a
mark of mourning and respect and in accordance with protocol, Flags should be flown at
half-mast all day on Friday 28 November 2014 from all buildings and establishments
occupied by Government departments and affiliated agencies.
- from a Premiers Department Memo.

It saddens me that, for the rest of their lives, Phil's family will see those images & video of Phil being struck all over the internet & in the media whenever Phil's bame is mentioned.

That should not be his legacy. That is not how he should be remembered.

Sure a lot of us (myself included) were criticial of him and criticised his inclusion in squads, however a lot of that was more directed at BM's incessant adoration of the bloke and not meant with any malice toward the bloke.

As a cricketer from country NSW, I can fully appreciate and understand just how hard Phil worked to become a test cricketer. Earning a baggy green is the toughest thing any cricketer can hope to achieve, but it's just that extra bit harder for a country kid, as it generally means relocating away from family and friends and backing yourself to make it work, while competing with countless other talented individuals, who have possibly been privvy to better better training facilities and the like.

To have earnt that test selection is a massive credit to him and he took that opportunity immediately. His story is not supposed to end this way and It should not have ended this way. It's just not fair.

He was a son, a brother, a friend and a team mate more than anything else, and from all reports, he was very good at all of them. His on-field feats, many of which are impressive, pale into insignificance against the man that was Phil Hughes who has tragically passed away today.

RIP Hughesy

I think that was his most likeable characteristic. In a time where Baggy Greens seemed to be handed out like lollies, Phil still had to work really hard for his. He took his omissions and droppings with grace, shunned IPL money to work on his game in England and never lost the resolve to play for Australia, with the next Baggy Green on the horizon with that dig he was felled in.

RIP Phil, 63*

There is also a mountain of support and heart warming stories and reflection of Phil as a cricketer, a boy and a man, which family, firends and others like us, in time, will always cherish and remember above all else.
