When I heard the news yesterday I was in shock as you are with an tragic news story but it wasn't until this morning when I saw the tribute on the today show that it really hit me and I cried for the first time in long time. I couldn't understand why I felt so emotional over this after I thought I had become fairly desensitised to this kind of stuff after all the news stories you hear everyday.

But I think I've come to realise personally that the passing of Hughes represents in its purest form just how fragile life really is and it puts in perspective of all the stupid shit we cause concern for ourselves everyday. Here we have a upcoming cricketer who was possibly going to represent Australia the following week taken from us for no reason. I think we can all take from this a greater appreciation and value of life from this.

james Sutherland at the press conference

"cricket will go ahead, when we are ready"

no official announcements regarding the 1st test,
now is the time to grieve
they want to take it day by day and fair enough

I think that was his most likeable characteristic. In a time where Baggy Greens seemed to be handed out like lollies, Phil still had to work really hard for his. He took his omissions and droppings with grace, shunned IPL money to work on his game in England and never lost the resolve to play for Australia, with the next Baggy Green on the horizon with that dig he was felled in.

RIP Phil, 63*

Yep,totally agree,Phil's work ethics were a throw back to the old days which you had to admire,he didn't want any favours, desire and hard work, applied with his talent would of fulfilled his ambition of being a main stay in the test team for years to come. He was a fine example of a young person striving to reach his goal, unfortunately some in society today think it is their god given right to be given every thing in life without earning it first, that could never be said against Phil which is more credit to him and his parents for the young man he turned out to be.

No. Kids dream of playing in the Sheffield shield, just like Phil Hughes did. There is a way to memorialise Phil but naming or renaming trophies isn't it.

agree

renaming competitions with a history and sentiment behind it isn't the right way to do it.

A similar thing that has been done with day 3 jane McGrath day SCG test would be my option

day 1 Adelaide test? Day 1 Gabba test? I think something will be done to carry on his legacy of never giving up on the baggy green

danny weilder on ch 9 said Hughes' family wants the test to go ahead

The more I think about the more I think it not only should go ahead but NEEDS to go ahead. I feel like playing the test would be a good tribute to the man as well as the best way for everybody to move on. That's if the players feel the same way of course.

I think that the decision should be up to the players based on his family's wishes. And I think they will decide to play.

I also think that any test this year is too early to start a special day for Phil. If the Gabba test goes ahead it will be special for a lot of reasons, most of them solemn but some happy. The best way to remember someone isn't when they're at their worst moment in life it's when they were at their best and any day or event should celebrate Phil Hughes' love of life, his family and mates and his joy of cricket.

If the first test goes ahead (after discussion with the family and the Australian cricketers), I would like to see the first session abandoned, and something done in honour of his memory.

I'd also like to see something else done at the SCG.

Agreed.
What should be done if the Gabba test goes ahead is a tribute during the lunch break and his Test number painted onto the field like some Grade teams are doing this weekend. Something small. Then later we can decide what special annual day is held in his honour in future years, whether that be at the SCG Test or the Adelaide Oval Test.

I get the impression it would be more honouring to Hughes to put on some black arm bands, observe a moments silence and then play cricket.

If you're going to abandon any cricket, abandon 63 minutes.

Initially I was of the same thinking as this. However in reality I just can't see the players being in the right mindset to play out five gruelling days of cricket so soon after. Keeping in mind the funeral will likely take place just a few days prior to Day 1. If it was an ODI I could imagine the team playing in his honour but five days on the field is such a long space of time to check your emotions and stay focused.
You are right though, it will be up to the players and Cricket Australia will respect their decisions, no matter what they choose in this, a heartbreaking moment in Australian sport and life.
