Seems to be the general feeling around. Even the casual cricket fans I know have been strongly affected, and they can't put their finger on why.

To me, he's the little country bloke who made it to stardom, but still remained the same inside.

How about starting in 2015, we use Phillip's birthday as the official start of the Australian cricketing summer? So his birthday would mark the official start of Test cricket in Australia, and we would always honour him this way.

I like this. Someone mentioned the day of his death for the same thing which I thought was a good idea but somehow I feel his birthday is better.

The heralds coverage has been pretty disgusting from the outset to be honest. Running a picture of Hughes dead on the ground as their backpage. The ridiculous article yesterday about Dr Orchard "saving" his life, now this germ.

Who'd have thought the telegraph would be the ones to handle this situation with tremendous dignity and grace while Fairfax bumbled around like dickheads.

The channel 9 tribute on the today show was also very moving. The quiver in Joe Hockey's voice when he is told live on air on 2GB gets me as well

Fairfax have been very poor lately. Its almost like they are just aping the tabloids now.

Just saw Michael Clarke's statement. Nothing but respect for Clarke as to how he has handled this week.

Every cricketer I have spoken to over the past 2 days is effectively the same in describing the whole situation as surreal.

Was very strange today at cricket. The first bouncer was met with a bit of a cringe but we got back into it and the game was played in a wonderful spirit.

Both sides observed a minutes silence before play, and we wrote his test cap number in chalk on the pitch.

It still feels like every few hours it freshly hits me. It slips my mind and I forget about it for a moment and then I'm reminded and all over again I realise Phil is gone and he's not coming back. The guy we were bantering about as late as Tuesday is gone. How I desperately wish right now we could be having a debate on the merits of his 100 verse Marsh's 100 and why he should or shouldn't be in the team.

The odds are just so astronomical. So many what ifs. The ball had to hit him in that precise spot to do this damage, what if it went just an inch higher or lower. What if Hughes had a slightly slower reaction. And even if you go to earlier than that, so many things had to align just right. There was an LBW shout earlier in the game, not out but what if the umpire just f**ked up and gave it out and Phil lived to old age. What if an edge carried to the slips and he safely walked off the ground disappointed about not going on with it but safe and sound.

Im the same mate

Was thinking in the middle of the night, why? and plenty of what ifs? I even for a very split second in time thought Hughes was ok and still with us, but that gets squashed very soon after.

It think it hurts so much more cause he was so young and never complained about the cards he was dealt. The world is a poorer place.

Whatever test Australia ends up playing next and all the tests for the summer , when the national anthem is played, its going to be so heartbreaking.

the saving his life article was probably correct

if the Doc hadn't done that his family and friends wouldn't have got to say goodbye

Reading articles about his injury he was seemingly dead from the time he lost consciousness on the ground. They gave him CPR until the ambulance arrived, then put him on life support from there until he died. From what Alan Jones said as well it sounded like those who actually knew what was going knew he was gone very early on.

Granted he gave them the ability to say goodbye before his heart stopped beating, which would have meant a huge amount to his family. Still seems like a huge jump of the gun to claim his life was saved given he was gone within hours of the article's release.

Not trying to play down what Orchard did in any way. I'm just sure the good Dr probably didn't appreciate having to read such a thing when he would have know better than most that the battle was lost

Sometimes for the sake of others the truth is better left unsaid.

Happened to be at Centenial Park for my Grandmas birthday today, had a quick drive past the SCG afterwards, really nice little memorial to him.

wrote in FFB just been pretty shattered by this happening, probably the age, the way it happened and other factors of the year combined but it's just a terrible, terrible incident.

Just like to say what a lovely family Phillip has. I saw them on news the other night were so humble and caring people.

Also Phillip's sister was comforting Sean Abbott at SCG a couple of nights ago only hours after he passed away. What tremendous courage from his sister to do that at the hardest time ever for Phillip's Family.

The Kiwis continuing with muted celebrations. Williamson has brought up his century. McCullum his double. They wander down the pitch, embrace, no smiles, minimal acknowledgement. McCullum brought up his double century with a 6...

Apparently McCullum and Williamson played in a team with Hughes in it at some stage.

Both of these innings are for Phillip.
