THE curtain has been drawn on another highly successful season in the Parramatta District Junior Rugby League.

Grand finals in junior and senior age groups were played at Marconi Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

Parramatta District Junior Rugby League executive officer Terry Rose said the 2008 season has been one of further consolidation for the game.

``The participant clubs are to be congratulated for contributing to making the game strong and successful in all age groups,'' Rose said.

``There has been a lot of hard work from the junior league executive, the participant clubs, players, officials, coaches and the supporters, making it such a success.

``Seven years ago, while our player registration numbers were healthy and we had 3800 on the books, that number has swelled to 6200 in 2008.

``We have 22 clubs and teams from under 6 through to A grade

``There has been a lot of hard work put in by many people to make the season work so well.''

Eight of the 22 clubs are Fairfield-district based, they are, Cabra Vale Diggers (CVD) Cobras, Cabramatta, Fairfield United, Fairfield Patrician Brothers, Mounties, Canley Vale Kookaburras, Canley Heights Dragons and Marconi Mustangs.

Marconi Mustangs were formed several years ago and are one of the new breed of clubs, proving to be thoroughbreds in the sport.

Marconi have 16 teams and the club is thriving and growing all the time in player numbers.

Rose said the introduction Marconi has proved a winner.

``Marconi has proved in a short time a new and emerging rugby league stronghold,'' he said.

``Hosting the grand finals on Saturday and Sunday was a very big success.

``We had more than 2000 people come through the gates on Saturday and very good turnout for Sundays matches.''

Rose said Marconi is traditionally known as a soccer organisation but the Mustangs have gallop quickly to prominence.

He said the punt taken to introduce rugby league to youngsters of Marconi and the Fairfield district has proved a winner. ``The club is well administered and Marconi Stadium is a perfect venue for footy as you can play and day and night games there,'' Rose said.

Be interesting to see how much of that increase has been from the influx of the Polynesian community, id say it would be quite huge

Well, would not say it was due to Polynesian influence, Rouse Hill Rhinos has gone from 3 teams 3 years ago to 16 this year. Most of the growth in the teams younger than U/!0s, a great club with kids from the kellyville/Rouse Hill area and no major demograhic as described.

At one game this year, we saw a team with 2 Liberians, 2 from the Ivory Coast and a Sudanese boy, all playing in the U10s and they were having a great time, loved te game from what I saw.

Has there been some new clubs created in the north-west area in the past 7 years or is it the older clubs increasing player numbers?

Rouse Hill Rhinos are 3 years old, Hills District is still the largest junior club in the Parramatta District, Kellyville are strong in numbers and there is another side based in the area, can't think of the name at the moment.

Lots of boys around 8 to 12 finalling getting their way and playing league, most of them spend a year or so in the soccer ranks and then get past their mothers. Hopefully the crazy pokie tax won't drain the support from the Leagues Clubs, but I am a bit nervous that the tax will make the sport dearer to the parents, thanks to the Carr and Egan greedy and incompetent govt.

Do you know what support Parramatta Leagues club give to the junior league?

I believe their grant is into 7 figures for junior development, easily the largest amont Sydney clubs, one of the reasons why DF complains about the tax, I know he is seen as a dinosaur, but he is very concerned about this side of things.

He really does want to see the juniors prosper, from what I know he is not the devil many people think, certainly in this respect, and I am no supporter of his in relation to coaches appointments etc

The Leagues Club provide a pretty substantial grant to junior league but the overal total of the grant reflects the coverage including the Junior Reps ie: Matts, Ball and School Development programs and PDJRL gets a portion of it - with a cut to budget pending.

We have a few new Clubs such as Blacktown PCYC (first year) as well as, Marconi & Rouse Hill who are now thriving in terms of numbers and to a lesser extent Kellyville. All these are some of the newer faces into PDJRL over the last 7 or so years.

Whilst there are a large amount of Polynesians taking part in Junior League in our District there are people from many nationalities who are coming into the Game. Blacktown PCYC has quite a few Sudanese & Somalian kids who literally only arrived in Australia late last year/early this year and jumped at the chance to play when the PCYC executive visited their schools.

The Numbers increased pretty steadily across the District.. A Number of Clubs boast in excess of 30 teams with some Clubs having 2 or 3 teams in an age division. PDJRL had one of the Biggest increases in participation in 2008.

Bring on 2009 :D:lol:

Kellyville has increased by about 20% this season, and with 1/5 of the clubs teams into gf and winning 3 they can only get bigger next year,as for funding, there is never enough. You only have to look at the 2 opposing fields in rousehill, centenary park is an absolute sh1thole,a quagmire in the wet,and concrete in the dry, where as across the road, the afl ground has a cambered surface for drainage ,a nice perimeter fence, and an excellentground cover, although not played on yet ,the afl has made sure the ground will handle most conditions
