MELBOURNE'S standing as the nation's sporting capital is under attack with a $150 million plan for a giant glass dome over Sydney's Olympic stadium.
The hi-tech, retractable roof - the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere - combined with revolutionary technology to allow the ground to be easily transformed to cater for AFL, soccer, rugby league, rugby union and cricket, with seating for more than 90,000, would make the stadium the most modern in Australia.
NSW power brokers believe the makeover would ensure Sydney wins the fight with Melbourne to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup soccer final.
"The big play here is an evolution of ANZ Stadium as a multi-purpose major event venue for grand finals, State of Origins, Bledisloe Cups, international cricket and rock concerts," a source close to the project said. "It will knock Melbourne out."
And in an assault on the AFL, the NRL will stage a Melbourne blockbuster on Good Friday at Etihad Stadium.
Sydney has moved to take advantage of the infighting between soccer chiefs and the AFL as revealed by the Herald Sun, a brawl that could see soccer barred from using Etihad Stadium for the World Cup.
An artist's impression shows how the Olympic Stadium would be transformed into a rectangular venue for soccer.
It is believed pivoting-tier technology will allow the grandstands to retract into a rectangular stadium for soccer, league and union, or an oval shape for AFL and cricket.
But Victorian Major Events Company chief Brendan McClements scoffed at the plan.
"They can put a roof on it but it'll still be in the same place," Mr McClements said of the Homebush venue, 17km west of the heart of Sydney.
"It's not just the stadium that makes the difference - it's about being a sporting city and the passion of the people," Mr McClements said.
"Melbourne has demonstrated that time and time again. That's why we're the world's No. 1 sporting capital."
Premier John Brumby said anyone who believed that Sydney had claims on the title was kidding themselves.
"Victoria is and always will be the events capital of Australia," Mr Brumby said.
Cricket legend Shane Warne said the MCG could never be matched.
"Everyone aspires to play at the MCG - no matter what sport," he said.
The push by Sydney comes as the war of words between the AFL and Football Federation Australia intensifies.
The AFL says Etihad Stadium will be off limits for World Cup soccer should Australia win the right to host the event in 2018 or 2022.
Melbourne's new rectangular stadium emerged as a possible alternative.
Builder Grocon revealed the 31,000-seat venue could be easily increased to 40,000.
