Is that payout guaranteed by the enterprise agreement, or is it something that can differ club to club?

the richer clubs would have the ability to keep paying out a contract that incurs a medical retirement but others would not. So you’d hope that this type of insurance would be mandatory on all contracts and not something clubs can choose to pay out of pocket

I believe medical retirements, are covered by insurance, which are standard clauses in NRL player contracts. Only reason is that the medical team appointed by the insurer are the one who determine whether a player is able to retire due to medical grounds (this was raised in the media when Inglis and Sam Burgess retired).

The contract guarantees the payment - All players are covered by Insurance- The guarantee of such payments I assume would also be listed in the CBA

All depends if the insurer approves the claim as they have denied medical retirement claims in the past - Steve Matai and Brett Stewart for instance

The NRL didn't approve their medical retirements either meaning Manly had to keep paying them for the duration of their contracts with these payments included under the cap.

The NRL has the discretion to approve medical retirements when the insurer has denied the claim- Clubs will then pay the player(s) but these payments won't be included under the cap.

If the Insurer accepts the claim these payments won't be included under the cap either.

Interesting that Boyd Cordner will be a contestant on SAS Australia - Some where In the Middle East this time

In the instance of a the NRL approved payout that clubs then foot the bill for, that seems a bit of an issue that could have an unfair effect on different clubs. Still good to know the players aren’t going to go without though.

I’d personally like to see medical retirements with payments based on injury as well though instead of just paying out a remaining contract. Similar to like a disability payout if the injury negatively affects their earning potential in other careers
