Players refusing to sing the National anthem in protest

Every year the majority of the players don't even sing it anyway. I doubt it will be any different tonight

If they didn’t bring it up and told you they weren’t going to sing then you wouldn’t be in here discussing it.

I see Craig Kelly has even got involved and said he’s open to changing the lyrics.
Why did he suddenly start talking about it?

“When gallant Cook from Albion sailed,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Til he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;”

I’ve never understood the obsession with Cook. FFS he wasn’t even the first Pom to land in Australia!

It really amazes me how people can’t see how singing this anthem is offensive to indigenous people.
Why should they sing it?

The song should be pissed off all together.
It’s shit.
I can still remember having to sing god save the queen at school.
So it’s not like it’s too late for advance Australia fair to be be pissed off.

It’s madness that the indigenous culture isn’t totally embraced and saved.
If anything white people should be singing an indigenous anthem.

I agree we could and should do more for our indigenous. This will offend some people but if the English didn't take Australia someone else would of. The indigenous Australians couldn't of stopped one of our powerful neighbours from moving in. Theyd be speaking Japanese if it wasn't for the whites,.

What’s the NRL going to do about the anthem?

The whole point is to attract attention, and they’ve done that. They haven’t taken anything away from origin because they’re not obligated to sing

My concern though is the extra attention for someone like Walker. He’s on debut, in the halves for game 1 at Suncorp - if he has a bad game I don’t want people pointing to this as the reason

They already have star power. The NRL could've helped them get attention without the players hijacking origin, how hard is that???

That's the point. If you don't say you're protesting something then it's not a protest. It's just another footballer who doesn't know the words.

Everyone who's saying 'I don't think it's offensive and it doesn't hurt anyone'. Yes it's not offensive to you. It's not hurtful to you.

Imagine if the Japanese had invaded during World War Two and 70 years later we were still singing the Japanese anthem. That's what this represents to a large portion of the indigenous community.

The Japanese would tell us to get f**ked in that scenario.

and when Origin is over and there is no big event... then what?

It is like every Jan you get the change the date people..Yet after Jan 26 you hear nothing. much better ways to get stuff done

It is true. I struggle to think of an uncivilised country. If not the English the Chinese or someone would of settled eventually

Hijacking Origin?
The non singing of the anthem hasn’t just started now, this is business as usual for Walker. It’s only that a clued on reporter remembered he didn’t sing it before the All Stars game that it has become a ‘thing’.

Walker, JAC and Chambers didn’t get together and say let’s make a stand against the anthem and hijack Origin, they were asked a question and answered accordingly.

So that is a good enough reason to just not let them have their protest you reckon?

@Timbo If they are so offended by the song why aren't they offended by pulling on the NEW SOUTH WALES or QUEENSland emblem and colours?

This argument again. f**k me dead.

It's the absolute worst, most pathetic, 'I'm not racist - but' level of argument.

You have no problem with indigenous Australians protesting mistreatment - you just don't think they should use the one avenue available to them to make it mainstream. Why can't these ungratful blackfellas just be accepting of the fact that we brought them 'civilization' and who cares if we eradicated their culture and committed genocide against them in the process? Why can't they just get over two hundred years of being literally treated like animals? Who cares that they don't live as long, earn less, have poorer access to education, are more likely to be incarcerated or suffer substance abuse? Not my fault! The British brought roads! They should get with the program and stop whinging because without the noble white man they'd still be in the bush hunting and gathering!

You are a poor excuse for a human being.

Jesus f**king Christ, listen to yourselves.

Someone else would've committed genocide anyway, so that makes the fact that British colonizers did it less bad some how?

Like I said I can understand how indigenous people feel about Australia I do not begrudge them that, but it cannot be changed. Life is not fair so being divisive and acting we are responsible for the actions of our ancestors is stupid IMO, no one is giving the land back. I'm not going to deny the horrible things that were done to our indigenous but I don't feel responsible at all.

The one avenue??? f**k off you imbecile. You are putting words in my mouth you pathetic merkin just so you can have your little socialist whinge. I don't like the amount of attention the protest is taking away from the game. Deal with you idiot it DOES NOT MAKE ME racist.

f**k im so over the faux outrage in todays society. If you don't fall into line with the lefties you are some kind of scumbag.
