Nah, in the age of colonisation if the Poms didn't arrive, it wouldn't have happened.

And a stone age people would have continued to exist right up to today.

Let me know what country takes you in?

Because no other European country had colonies....
In a thread that features some massive levels of ignorance, you manage to stand out. Congratulations.

So it is ok because someone else would have done it anyway?

You don’t know what we are actually talking about do you?

Who is saying this, but if you believe it wouldn't have happened than you believe in a fantasy world & not the real one.

It was the age of colonisation - English, French, Spanish & Portugese.

You can't change history, but you need to learn from it.

Our anthem is not the best, and I wouldn't argue against a change but what to. No one on here has put up a real alternative.

And don't say have a verse in aboriginal - the tribes did not have a common dialect.

Compare the treatment of Australian Aborigines with the Maori.
Comparing Australia to New Zealand in this regard is stupid. There're totally different social and historical forces at play.

For one thing the Maori united, organised and manged to effectively fight the British to a stalemate, which forced the British to make peace deals and arrangements to work with the Maori instead of being able to simply dominate them.

That never happened in Australia (or anywhere else that I can think of), and it creates a totally different dynamic historically, because instead of being a conquered people, which if we are being honest is what the Aboriginals were (as were the Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Cornish, Indians, etc, etc), the Maori were never conquered and as such forced the British to treat them as equals (well as close to equals as was possible in those times).

So yeah trying to compare Australia with NZ is like trying to compare apples and oranges, which is why you have such different outcomes.
Not only that but convicts who behaved did really well.

It was only those who kept on breaking the law that were treated like shit in places like Moreton Bay.
Not if they weren't English...

Good luck finding Irish, Scottish, etc, people that weren't connected by family to the aristocratic class in London that weren't treated terribly. Heaven forbid that you were a Asian person (normally Chinese) that had come to the gold fields or something.

There have been plenty of genuine suggestions of alternatives in the 750-odd posts in this thread.

You not liking doesn't mean it's not a "real alternative"

Crap, most were tongue in cheek.

I am Australian is probably the only one.

Waltzing Matilda was tossed in the 1970s.

Not the best?

It actually excludes indigenous Australians.
It completely ignores their existence.

Young and free
“Young” meaning white settlement when compared to other countries.
Not the age of the people living here.

No mention of the 60 thousand years of aboriginal occupation .

Or the fact for the majority of the time since English settlement that indigenous people were in fact not free!

pfft what a load of shit
It doesn't f**kin mention any race or people

Young means the age of the nation - foundation 1901. The song written in the 19th century is not the anthem - the rewritten version is.

Or the fact for the majority of the time since English settlement that indigenous people were in fact not free!

Well lucky its only been the anthem since 1984 then huh

That is your intrepretation.

For the majority of Aussies, it means - the federation of the 6 colonies & the establishment of an independent country in 1901.

And that is their interpretation too.
That is why it’s their right to not sing the piece of shite.
That’s what this about
Not if any other country were going to invade them.
It’s about the actual song FFS.

Just change some of the lyrics. Instead of “for we are young and free”, change it to something like “from old and new we come” instead of “of beauty rich and rare” something like “our ancient spirits strong”. You get the idea.
