Ribot went from an ordinary Lock to rival Eric Grothe as the best Winger in the game at the time

Slater was a centre when he debuted.

I am as confused by what played out with Slater and Inglis today, as i was at the time. I get that Slater has had an incredible career as a fullback and is one of the best of all time, but for me, it was pretty clear Melbourne got it wrong, Slater should have stayed at centre and Inglis at fullback IMO

I think Bellamy got it spot on.

Can't see the value in Slater as a centre.

It's a strange what if, given their careers and it's hard to argue against what melbourne did given that, but i think Inglis is and always has been a better fullback than Slater and i think Slater would have still had a steller career as a centre (he looked VERY good there early in his career)

They both offer a lot at FB, however I'd say Slater's been the better FB because his positional play and defence is better.

GI's probably more talented but Slater's the better player, or was. Slater's arguably the best FB of all time, Inglis is too lazy to go close to him to be honest.

I would pick Slater at his height at fullback over Inglis's height at fullback personally.

I think Inglis's peak years were spent at centre though so hard to compare. Certainly Inglis is the better athlete but I would take Slater over him at the back with his competitiveness.

Inglis is much more suited to centre than Slater imo too.

Either way you couldn't really go wrong though.

The quality that made Slater best fullback of all time is something that clearly distinguishes him from many equally talented attacking players, his ability to organise the best defensive line possible. No player wants to concern himself with peripheral play, the confidence they have in Slater to let them know where they should be in defence is extraordinary

Comparing Slater with other fullbacks by what he does on the field is an admirable pastime open to conjecture . . . him NOT playing in a team that expects to hear his directions, Storm/Qld/Australia, and the insecurity it causes is what separates him from the rest

P.s. guys Slater started out as a half in the juniors. That's the position he trialled with for the Broncos.

Wasn't slater a jockey?

IMO slater at fb is as good as they come
Inglis pretty much anywhere on the feild is as good as they come.
So the decision to play slater at fb would have been simple.

pretty much spot on. slaters competitiveness and ability to go 100miles an hour for the whole game really makes him stand out. he's so busy in attack and defence. you saw how much the attack suffered in the 4N without slater. GI had no idea how to get involved.

there was a play slater made a few years ago in a club game (cant remember against who), where he made a try saving tackle at one corner. on the very next play the attack threw it out to the other wing stretching the storms defence but Slater got across and made another try saving tackle. one of the best defensive efforts i've seen for perseverance and awareness

GW here,
Rabbitohs95, how can you forget Anthony Browne?
Rabbits winger of a decade ago who became a prop the season after with nothing in between.

Of today's players, how about Ben Henry for the Warriors, he played Stand Off in NSW Cup, Centre, Lock and Second Row for the Warriors and Hooker for the Kiwis.

Aubusson debuted at 5/8, became a backrower, then a stand in centre, moved to backrow again and has been playing a utility role off the bench which includes hooker.

Most versatile player in the comp, right edge backrower is his forte though.

Yes, both Henry and Aubusson are great versatile players.

Would love either of them at the Broncos.

What happened to Mitch's brother? He played for the roosters too right?
