What we know is

PNG wants a team
The Australian government wants them to have a team
The NRL has stated a PNG team is high on their priority list
Cairns has mooted being a partner with PNG initially in getting a team off the ground

Anything else is just guesswork by us and our view is tainted by either negative or positive views of such a project.

Cairns has proposed plans for a 20k stadium but it’s no closer to reality than it’s ever been.

I don’t think the PNG bid has ever discussed being partnered with Cairns, as far as I know the Cairns mayor pushed it in the media and the media has just run with it because Cairns is close on the map. Look at that whole article no quotes from the actual PNG bid team.
Nor any from the State Govt (or even the local state member). A local mayor's opinion is nothing burger.

Without state or fed govt funding, there is no stadium, so the idea is dead in the water.

And why would a NRL team full of Australians playing out of Cairns, create a "pathway" for PNG players? Why cant that pathway happen now?

This is objectively a shit idea

The stadium is pretty ordinary from memory ( never seen it in person though…) I wonder if the Cairns Mayor is looking to put some Council money in to upgrade the stadium?
No mention of it yet, lipstick on a pig from the olympic motza.

I dunno… I don’t really see how playing games in Cairns is going to do much to develop the game in PNG… I would expect the away teams fans to dominate the crowds… going up there for a holiday… sounds appealing to me if my team got a game there …

It's not a stadium.

It's Barlow Park

this is what happens when you don't have a plan or strategy to follow, dumb ideas like PNG gain traction and governments, media organisations end up making decisions for you and taking you down a path....
Many Aussie rugby league fans are just so insular

the future of the game is internationals and the pacific especially

a png nrl team is the most visionary thing the game would have done since the foundation of the nswrl in 1908

I love the idea of it, don't get me wrong but it has so many barriers. How many people in PNG can afford to: attend games, buy merchandise or even watch on TV?

I think it’s fairly safe to say that a PNG team will have vastly different income streams to a standard NRL team. But let’s not let that get in the way of the inherent biases of posters here

I think it’s also safe to say that a PNG team brings a vast array of advantages and disadvantages to a standard PNG team. Some here only focus on the negative and others the opposite. I don’t think anybody is in a position to criticise or support it till we see what the proposal is. I am pretty excited by the idea in principle but until I see details I’ll just maintain a positive sense of anticipation.

The problem is that a change in Government can often mean a change in priorities - and it's not inconceivable that today's "strategically important investment" could become tomorrow's "nice to have, but necessary to trim".

If a future Government decides to pull the subsidy, then what?

Ok, so assuming that's the case, the key questions are:

In what ways would the income streams be different? (Ie what's going to be a greater income stream, what's going to be a lesser income stream, compared to other NRL clubs?)

If Government subsidies are a proportion of their income stream, what contingency does the club have in case of those subsidies being reduced or pulled altogether?

100 million made the storm what they are today

png will be receiving up to double that

the club could stand on its own two feet by then

as long as labor are in power the policy won’t change it’s been their policy all the way back to bill shortens time

it’s also not including png govt support either

i suspect if they got good corporate support they wouldn’t even need much game day revenue since the nrl grant is so high

Income streams will be government and multi national companies both of which have a vested interest in the country. Contingencies? See above.
The costs of an NRL club will be small/tiny bickies for these investors. As I’ve said on many occasions, until we see the bid and it’s details we are all guessing.

Labor has been in power in Australia for 7 of the last 30 odd years. Funding million dollar athletes will be electoral poison (especially in the AFL states), and quite rightfully to.

Not one multi national has pledged support to this concept.

It's a poorly thought out brain fart of an idea.

I’ve seen this argument here many times. The concept of losing a federal election over the funding of a PNG NRL team is at best delusional. Sorry mate but that’s just silly.
