It’s a foreign aid package, so I don’t get why people are expecting miracles. It’ll be expensive, inefficient, overrun with corruption, and quickly changed or replaced once political priorities change.
Further to my previous post.

PVL pointed out that Phil Gould mentioned that kids (boys) don't go to school, but the turn up in droves when Rugby League player visits. He then extrapolated that out to infer that a RL program would suddenly mean kids would turn up to school.

Unlike in Australia, Im pretty sure kids in PNG aren't bunking off school to go down the shops and punch darts with their mates.

Law of diminishing returns seems apt here.

Whatever the number only a small part of it will go to RL at all, and even then the majority of that money earmarked for RL will go to social programs that use RL as a tool to push a message and not to actually developing the sport.

If the NRL has anything significant in terms of "out of pocket" expenses, then I think the concept is dead. The NRL won't fund a team that has little to no return in terms of TV, gate etc. etc.

With an overwhelming number of club ceo's,chairmen and coaches not wanting PNG in, what is Vlandys going to have to offer them to get them to vote yes?

Albo couldn't give two shits where its based.
Cant see how it can be based in Port Moresby, they wouldn't get any players signing.
Even basing it in Cairns they are going to have to make it very enticing for players to sign given the travel imposition and the concept of playing home games in PNG heat and humidity, and less than favourable security conditions. That'll be a tough sell for any recruitment manager/CEO! How much overs are they going to have to pay to get players?

Even Perth red is talking about a png nrl team as it’s happening
pretty clear vlandys wants it to happen, if it will? Well time will tell.

Still some big questions to be answered:

Stadium needs upgrading
Where to base
how to attract players
how to deal with travel
how to try and generate some revenue
jnr elite pathways in nsw or qrl cup set ups
how to get existing clubs to agree
how to guarantee Govt funding
how to get tv on board and seeing value in it

tik tok if they are coming in in less than 2 years time lol

There are plans to upgrade Barlow Park for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. It won't be a very expensive upgrade. A few proposals have been presented.

V'landys can introduce a PNG team within the next couple of years without having to worry too much about getting the clubs off side. The real test will come if he introduces PNG when the club agreement is up for renogtiation. The clubs will use it as bargaining power.

Well there's only two options, Aus Govt or PNG Govt (via the Aus govt handouts). So you and I in effect :)

China.

Populous rebuilt the National stadium, it says on their project page:

“The redeveloped stadium has 3,000 permanent seats and 9,000 lightweight seats, with an ultimate capacity of 25,000 permanent seats. The facility also includes 500 corporate seats, a viewing deck and members seating for an additional 300 people.”

So expandable to 25k permanent seats, not sure if that includes extra capacity for corporate as they’re listed separately there, could end up being 26-27k capacity.

How much that costs, who pays for it and when I have no idea.

And that's why it will fail. Who in PNG are going to get behind an aussie based team full of kiwis and Aussies that only go to PNG every weeks for a day?
They're not idiots.

Law of diminishing returns is an understatement lol.

It's typical modern politics and statecraft; the underlying issues are complex and difficult to address, so just ignore them and invest your time and resources into a relatively inexpensive program that's good for PR and you think will buys votes, but fails to do anything of substance to address the actual issues.
If the NRL has anything significant in terms of "out of pocket" expenses, then I think the concept is dead. The NRL won't fund a team that has little to no return in terms of TV, gate etc. etc.
If we assume that the $60mil annually for 10 years is accurate (which is a terrible assumption but bare with me), maybe roughly a third of that goes to RL programs each year if we're being generous, and maybe $10-15mil goes directly to supporting the NRL club.

If that's the case then they're factoring the NRL's annual grant into to operating costs of the NRL side at the very least, and they're almost certainly planning on some other source of funding for the construction of infrastructure and facilities.

So yeah, the government is expecting the NRL to incur some amount of out of pocket expenses if the $60mil number is accurate, but I highly, highly doubt that it's accurate. It sounds like a number that somebody pulled out of their arse because they thought it sounded big, but really it's significant unders for what they're trying to achieve.

The NRL would also be mad to agree to support this PNG side unless it's going to leave a legacy for the sport in Australia as well. At the very least I'd be after a few stadium upgrades or rebuilds, and solid investment into the grassroots and community RL in underfunded and disadvantaged areas of the country.

The whole reason it's even being discussed, is because the ARLC believe they don't have to invest even one cent into the venture.

The moment the Govt funding disappears or doesn't eventuate, they will drop PNG like a hot potato.

Despite what people think, this is not even close to a done deal. The optics of this, for a government that is trending down in the polls are horrific. Especially when half the country will be immediately against it, and every other code will arc up.
I know, I just like pissing PR off
