pretty clear vlandys wants it to happen, if it will? Well time will tell.

Still some big questions to be answered:

Stadium needs upgrading
Where to base
how to attract players
how to deal with travel
how to try and generate some revenue
jnr elite pathways in nsw or qrl cup set ups
how to get existing clubs to agree
how to guarantee Govt funding
how to get tv on board and seeing value in it

tik tok if they are coming in in less than 2 years time lol
What vlandys wants vlandys get

you’re lucky he wants Perth next

here’s hoping he changes his mind and Christchurch is team 19

China.

Populous rebuilt the National stadium, it says on their project page:

“The redeveloped stadium has 3,000 permanent seats and 9,000 lightweight seats, with an ultimate capacity of 25,000 permanent seats. The facility also includes 500 corporate seats, a viewing deck and members seating for an additional 300 people.”

So expandable to 25k permanent seats, not sure if that includes extra capacity for corporate as they’re listed separately there, could end up being 26-27k capacity.

How much that costs, who pays for it and when I have no idea.
So it has the potential to be better than PRS?

Has V'landys said he wants Perth as the 19th team?

I've only heard him say Perth is a chance of picking up the 19th or 20th licence.
Sadly there was a quote on here where the great man said basically he’s had many meetings with the wa govt people and they are very serious about a team and very good to work with

The whole reason it's even being discussed, is because the ARLC believe they don't have to invest even one cent into the venture.

The moment the Govt funding disappears or doesn't eventuate, they will drop PNG like a hot potato.

Despite what people think, this is not even close to a done deal. The optics of this, for a government that is trending down in the polls are horrific. Especially when half the country will be immediately against it, and every other code will arc up.

The NRL would also be mad to agree to support this PNG side unless it's going to leave a legacy for the sport in Australia as well. At the very least I'd be after a few stadium upgrades or rebuilds, and solid investment into the grassroots and community RL in underfunded and disadvantaged areas of the country.

This is something that hasn’t been discussed much. At the end of the day the government can want a PNG team all they like the NRL will have the last say and they should use that leverage.

Regarding stadiums I would say only Cowboys, Broncos, Dolphins, Titans, Eels, Panthers, Roosters, Rabbitohs, Storm have adequate medium-long term stadiums. Even some of them could be nudging the limits in their current stadiums with a decent period of growth in the next 5-10 years. There is no shortage of options for the NRL to push for.

Populous is an architectural firm.

They don't build things, much less fund them.

I'm not sure "build us new stadiums or we won't accept the money you are prepared to give us" is that strong a message.

It would be a hilariously shit outcome for Cairns to hoover up any Federal govt stadium funding and Sydney and Brisbane get none.

And despite what some dumbarse southerners think, Barlow Park isn't a "relatively cheap upgrade"

Fair enough, designed then. I’m definitely no construction expert but it sounds like there is some sort of foundation to expand it to 25k in the future? Though it also says 3000 permanent seats so that’s a long way from 25000 permanent.

The NRL & the PNG project will need all of that money though, the NRL won’t be pocketing any of it. If the NRL puts it on the table as part of the PNG deal and the government declines then the NRL can just say no to PNG as team 18 and go their own way with Perth or NZ2.

The PNG side is a huge potential burden to the NRL if government funding ends. For the NRL to take on that risk it should give them some bargaining power if they’re smart enough to use it.

Incorrect, he has talked about the bears return and that might be in perth... or somewhere else

I'll be surprised if the Bears agree to relocate to another location. Their non-negotiables are too much for anyone to accept.

The best place for the Bears is Gosford. It already has a stadium and juniors. I'd like to see it considered within the next 15 years.

What would a new Cairns stadium be for anyway? PNG shouldn’t play many if any games there and Cairns is an awful backup option if PNG falls over. Unless it’s 20k+ I doubt Cowboys would entertain the idea either.

I’m all for having a few decent regional 12-15k stadiums but it’s not a priority for the NRL to push for.

Their ‘non - negotiables‘ seem quite negotiable. Their CEO said the following in the same interview on SEN a few weeks back:
‘Two to four games @ NSO’
‘Two games @ NSO’
‘I think our fans would be happy with one. Bears v Manly would be fantastic‘

As things stand the government aren’t offering the NRL any money for a PNG side.

They’re simply saying that they’d like it to exist so that can use it as a political tool, so they might help underwrite it, which isn’t a great deal of use when in reality the NRL don't really want or need a PNG side. After all the only reason it’s being discussed at all is because government is offering to help pay for it, which again, they actually haven’t so far, at least not officially.
